About the role

The Spoken Language Interpreter will provide interpreting, transliterating, and translation services, as needed for Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and staff throughout the University Hospital.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in Interpreting and/or Interpreter Training Program graduate
  • Preferred certification through national governing body
  • Proficiency in English and the target language(s) with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare procedures
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience interpreting
  • PREFERRED: Supervised interpreting experience in the medical / mental health setting
  • Ability to interpret effectively, accurately, and impartially both receptive and expressive, using medical terminology as appropriate
  • Ability to work with interdisciplinary professionals in a team environment
  • Comfortable working in the medical field
  • Able to maintain professional demeanor in all situations
  • Experience in problem solving and complaint resolution preferably in a healthcare setting
  • Prior to being considered, Interpreter must job shadow position for hire for a minimum of 2 hours
  • Prior to being considered, Interpreter must have a passing score from department administered interpreting assessment
  • PREFERRED: Computer experience with a working knowledge of database entry, Microsoft Office products, and strong attention to detail required

Responsibilities

  • Provide in-person American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation between Deaf / Hard of Hearing (DHH) patients, family, companions and UC Health staff and providers
  • Interpret in a variety of medical settings including clinics, hospitals, emergency rooms, and mental health environments
  • Accurately convey information using consecutive and simultaneous interpretation techniques while maintaining the message’s tone and intent
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and professional interpreting standards
  • Facilitate communication that is culturally appropriate and sensitive to the needs of both the patient and medical staff
  • Use consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation techniques as appropriate for each interaction
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant information or patient background when available
  • Collaborate with the Interpreting Services team to ensure coverage and timely response to interpreting needs
  • Collaborate with clinical teams to anticipate and respond to interpreting needs throughout the facility
  • Document interpreting encounters as required by department policy
  • Participate in ongoing training and development to stay current with medical terminology and interpreting best practices
