Spanish Interpreter, Spoken Language II
About the role
The Interpreter will facilitate effective interpretation across multiple modalities, including in person, phone, and video interpreting, for patients, providers, and family members. They will serve as a cultural liaison and patient advocate, educate providers on working with interpreters, advocate for the appropriate use of interpreting to promote patient safety, and partner with colleagues to ensure efficient coverage and patient-centered scheduling of interpreters.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate effective interpretation across multiple modalities, including in person, phone, and video interpreting, for patients, providers, and family members.
- Serve as a cultural liaison and patient advocate when the situation requires.
- Educate providers on how to work with interpreters when needed.
- Advocate for the appropriate use of interpreting to promote patient safety.
- Partner with colleagues, including schedulers, to use shared decision-making to ensure efficient coverage and patient-centered scheduling of interpreters.
- In preparation for encounters, complete appropriate chart review and continually seek to broaden their knowledge to provide optimal interpreting encounters.
- Document and drop charges within Epic to ensure accurate documentation and capture reimbursement when possible.
Requirements
- 40 hours of interpreter training required or within 6 months of hire for languages of lesser diffusion.
- Holds and maintains national certification through either the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI), CCHI Certified, when available, or National Board of Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) Active Status on the Minnesota Spoken Language Health Care Interpreter Roster.
- Preferred qualifications include 40 hours of interpreter training completed prior to hire, some general college preferred, especially programs that focus on interpreting and translation skills, and two years interpreting experience including one year medical interpreting experience.
