Job Summary
General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS supports critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide. We are seeking a Spacecraft Structural Dynamics Analysis Engineer to join our Mechanical Engineering Team.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Function in a team environment developing engineering solutions that require creative designs, detailed analysis, investigation and resolution of routine engineering problems.
- Work on spacecraft and payload systems, high energy lasers, electro-optical systems and other various systems.
- Perform structural and dynamic analysis on components, spacecraft, and launch vehicle systems.
- Apply statistical methods and perform mathematical calculations to evaluate strength and dynamic capabilities.
- Determine technical objectives and develop innovative, practical solutions to advanced technical engineering problems.
- Address complex and difficult technical issues requiring highly creative approaches, drawing on advanced engineering concepts.
- Work and lead in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Oversee prototype builds and implement lessons learned into design.
Qualifications
- Typically requires a bachelor's degree, master's degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelor's degree, seven or more years of experience with a master's degree, or four or more years with a PhD.
- May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
- Experience with structural design and analysis.
- Real-world experience analyzing modal, random vibration, shock, and stress, including correlation of analytical results to test.
- Experience applying analytical results to relevant structural codes and criteria, including fatigue and fracture analysis.
- Proficiency with CAD and FEA software (Solidworks, ANSYS, NASTRAN, FEMAP).
- Strong technical expertise in engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with ability to organize, plan, schedule, and coordinate workloads.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory.
- Customer-focused with ability to work on a self-initiated basis or in a team environment, with the ability to work extended hours and travel as required.
- Able to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Laboratory environment exposure (materials characterization, materials testing, vibration testing, failure analysis).
- Experience with aluminum honeycomb panels.
- Mechanical design experience.
- Background with optical systems, flight systems, or military systems.
- Experience with space/launch environments.
- Proficiency with MATLAB.
- Project leadership experience.
- Published works in professional engineering journals or presentations at engineering symposia.
