Space Remote Sensing and Data Science Deputy Group Leader (R&D Manager 3)

About the Role

The Space Remote Sensing and Data Science Group (ISR-6) is seeking a Deputy Group Leader (DGL) to join a collaborative and dynamic team. ISR-6 is an innovative, vibrant group within the Intelligence & Space Research (ISR) Division, which has been designing, building, and operating ground, air, and space-based measurement and detection systems for over 60 years to address challenging scientific and national security problems.

The group, comprising nearly 40 scientists, engineers, postdocs, and students, develops and deploys sophisticated detection systems and analysis tools for mission areas including nuclear non-proliferation, space domain awareness, atmospheric and planetary science, and multi-source intelligence. Core capabilities include spectral, spatial, and temporal sensing (acoustic, optical, infrared, RF, and x-rays); source phenomenology modeling; data analysis and machine learning; and detector/system design and deployment across ground, airborne, and space-based platforms.

The Deputy Group Leader will work closely with the Group Leader to provide scientific, technical, and operational leadership, devoting approximately 50% of their time to group management while continuing technical work in a half-time capacity.

Responsibilities

• Work with ISR Division Leadership, program offices, project leaders, and stakeholders to oversee and coordinate work, ensuring timely and budget-compliant delivery of quality products and services.
• Mentor, coach, and develop staff, emphasizing career growth, performance management, salary administration, staffing plans, and onboarding.
• Marshal resources and investments for the group’s technical capabilities, facilities, and computational infrastructure.
• Manage workforce and group administration, including financial oversight, facility sustainment, and process optimization to support mission objectives safely and securely.

• Security Clearance: Ability and willingness to obtain a Q clearance (U.S. citizenship generally required).

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience). STEM degree preferred.

Desired Qualifications

• Project leadership, proposal development, and customer relationship growth.
• Experience supervising multidisciplinary teams with diverse backgrounds.
• Familiarity with LANL or large R&D institutional policies and processes.
• Working knowledge of DOE/NNSA, DoD, or other government agencies, particularly in space-based detection missions.
• Knowledge of Human Performance Improvement (HPI) or Safe Conduct of Research (SCoR) principles.
• Active Q/SCI clearance/access.

Physical Requirements

• Movement between buildings within a half-mile radius, including uneven or inclined terrain.
• Travel within large interior spaces, including stairs.
• Direct interaction with hardware, equipment, and instruments in office and laboratory environments.

Work Environment

This onsite position is located in Los Alamos, NM. Regular appointment employees must serve a 1-year commitment in the role before applying for other Laboratory positions.
