Southdale Community Centre - Fitness Centre Expansion
About the Project
Since its original construction in 1979, the existing facility has undergone a number of transformations as the community has evolved. In recent years, the Southdale Community Centre catchment has experienced a period of rapid growth and diversification which have placed increasing demands on the centre’s ability to support the changing recreational needs within all demographics in the community.
1x1 architecture was engaged by the City of Winnipeg and Southdale Recreation Association in late 2019 to begin work as the prime consultant, providing full architectural and engineering services, for the development of a new modern indoor fitness centre that is flexible and adaptive and will support a variety of leisure, recreation, health, wellness, fitness and athletic training programs for all demographics.
Project Details
The current community centre is a 78,000 sq.ft. facility that includes two (2) full-size ice surfaces, a small leisure rink for pleasure skating and a multi-use gymnasium. The work of this project was focused on renovating a 3,000 sq.ft. area of the existing building and constructing a new 5,500 sq.ft addition on the north side of the property.
In addition to the new Fitness Centre, the programme also included new multi-purpose rooms, new meeting rooms, a new boardroom/training room, a new gender-inclusive changeroom area, and new accessible washrooms. The project also involved site work to modify the existing parking area, landscaping and drainage affected by the new building expansion.
Design and Construction
The design for this project was developed in a manner that integrates with the existing facility to maintain a visual continuity throughout the community centre – however, there was also a desire to create a unique, elevated aesthetic to allow this new portion of the community centre to be distinguishable, inviting, and invigorating.
