About the role

The Sound Technician (SOUN) is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of all sound systems in the various entertainment venues for a variety of produced entertainment, events, and activities. Duties must be performed in accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s The Royal Way, SQM standards, USPH guidelines, environmental, and safety policies.

Reporting Structure

  • Reports directly to the Stage Production Manager(s).
  • Reports to the Head Sound and Light Technician for daily and weekly schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, repair, inspect, and troubleshoot all shipboard sound systems in entertainment venues.
  • Set up and break down sound equipment for functions including groups, charters, presentations, and theme nights.
  • Meet with headliners, guest entertainers, and groups to gather sound-related requirements and update showfiles.
  • Maintain the technical and artistic integrity of produced entertainment; obtain written approval from the Royal Caribbean Miami Office before making changes.
  • Power off non-essential equipment when not in use.
  • Participate in duty rotations, including preparing venues for boarding, opening/closing entertainment venues, following USPH guidelines, and maintaining clean workspaces.
  • Ensure all sound-related equipment is maintained and complete AMOS Work Orders as issued.
  • Work with the Head Sound and Light Technician to inspect speakers bi-weekly, clean air filters monthly, maintain spare parts inventory, and replace blown speaker drivers.
  • Conduct daily shipboard rounds to check HVAC airflow, water leaks, and workspace cleanliness.
  • Communicate maintenance needs and equipment requirements with the Technical Director, Stage Production Manager(s), and Head Sound and Light Technician.
  • Coordinate to maintain accurate records of sound equipment, including inventory, maintenance logs, and repairs.
  • Provide training to Technical Stage Staff and Lounge Technicians for performance improvement and advancement.
  • Use only company-approved communication channels for business correspondence.
  • Attend entertainment-related meetings as required.
  • Test, inventory, and install new or repaired sound equipment.
  • Regularly back up show files and store them securely in multiple locations.
  • Label all entertainment equipment racks with power supply, source, and location information.
  • Maintain and update SOUN handover notes with photos and videos for smooth transitions.
  • Securely store and provide access to all passwords for relevant personnel.
  • Enforce company policies and procedures.
  • Include Global Technical Operations, Technical Director, and Entertainment in communications with external vendors.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school or basic education equivalency required.
  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Technical Theater, Sound, Lights, or A/V preferred.
  • Background in stage, technical theatre, and production (e.g., electrical, technical, light, and sound) preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience with hands-on programming, live FOH mixing, and maintenance of audio equipment.

Skills

  • Experience with musical theater and show control systems preferred.
  • Proficient in operating analog and digital sound consoles.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and maintain audio consoles, backline equipment, and outboard audio gear, including replacing blown speaker drivers.
  • Skilled in setting up bands, microphone placement, stage monitor placement, and operating recording/playback devices.
  • Expertise in live audio, including FOH and monitor mixing.
  • Strong teamwork skills for collaboration with technicians and performing artists.
  • Understanding of computer networking preferred.
  • Proficient in entertainment technology software applications.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate technical support needs.
  • Stay updated with advancements in the entertainment industry.
  • Physically able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
