About the role

The Sonographer job performs the practice of ultrasonography and is responsible for the administration of high-frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques to humans of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for medical purposes. The Sonographer/Technologist performs ultrasonography procedures and related techniques, producing images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner.

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate explanations and instructions to the patient and family using age-appropriate language and verifying that the patient understands and agrees to the completion of the ordered exam.
  • Perform ordered exams or therapy in accordance with established imaging protocols while respecting the patient’s ability and comfort.
  • Adequately adhere to policies and utilize protocols to determine that expected outcomes have been met.
  • Document deviations from protocol and/or patient-specific issues that may impact image quality.
  • Notify the appropriate health care provider when the immediate clinical response is necessary based on procedural findings, patient condition, or other relevant concerns that may impact patient safety or care.
  • Complete all required post-processing, image display, preliminary reporting, and transfer for physician review in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate timely order closure, charge entry, and PACS QA completion.
  • Routinely cover open shifts as appropriate based on level of competency.
  • Perform all ultrasound-guided procedures, including but not limited to drainages, aspirations, and biopsies.

Requirements

  • Certified by the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT) as a sonographer ARRT(S) or RDMS or CCI certification in medical sonography or RDCS certification in cardiac sonography or RVT certification as a Vascular Technologist.
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers.
  • Completed 6-month orientation.

Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience can be hired directly into this role.

Skills

  • Knowledge and Competency: Experienced and competent in routine and complex studies.
  • Technical Standards: Complete understanding of technical standards, scope of practice, department and health system policies, and safety and service standards.
  • Equipment Knowledge: Complete understanding of imaging equipment, image processing software, instrumentation, and ancillary patient care equipment.
