Solution Architect
About the role
The Solution Architect at Commence plays a pivotal role in transforming business, functional, and technical requirements into scalable, secure, and compliant solution designs for a CMS case management program. This role bridges the gap between business stakeholders, product owners, engineering, data, and infrastructure teams, ensuring all solutions align with the program's target architecture, CMS requirements, and strategic objectives.
Responsibilities
- Develop end-to-end solution architectures aligned with CMS business objectives and technical standards
- Translate business requirements into detailed technical designs, including logical, physical, application, integration, and deployment architecture diagrams
- Define solution patterns, standards, and reusable components
- Ensure architectural consistency across multiple workstreams
- Support architecture reviews and technical decision-making processes
- Design secure provider, beneficiary, and healthcare data exchange solutions using FHIR, HL7, Direct Messaging, RESTful APIs, and event-driven integration patterns
- Define API integration patterns and orchestration workflows; develop integration strategies for external healthcare and CMS systems
- Design provider directory and beneficiary information exchange solutions
- Design cloud-native solutions leveraging AWS services, including containerized and serverless application architectures
- Define application deployment architectures and environment strategies; collaborate with Cloud Architects on infrastructure requirements to ensure high availability, scalability, resilience, and performance
- Work with Data Architects to define data ingestion patterns, data transformation workflows, data quality controls, metadata management strategies, and lakehouse and medallion architectures
- Ensure solution designs support reporting, analytics, and operational data needs; address provider data variability and normalization challenges
- Collaborate with the Security Lead to embed CMS ARS requirements, HIPAA safeguards, NIST controls, and FedRAMP requirements into all solution designs; support security assessments and compliance reviews
- Provide architectural guidance to development teams, review technical designs and code implementations, and identify technical risks with mitigation strategies
- Mentor engineers and technical team members; support production issue resolution and root cause analysis
- Create technical specifications and implementation guidance
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field
- 8+ years of experience in solution architecture, systems architecture, or enterprise application design
- Experience supporting large-scale federal or healthcare technology programs
- Experience designing cloud-native, API-driven solutions using AWS services and CI/CD pipelines
- Experience with enterprise application architecture, service-oriented and microservices architectures
- Experience with healthcare interoperability standards including FHIR and HL7, and provider and beneficiary data workflows
- Experience with data integration, transformation, and governance in healthcare contexts
- Experience working within Agile development environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting CMS modernization initiatives or healthcare interoperability solutions
- Experience with provider directory and healthcare exchange systems
- Experience supporting data lake, lakehouse, or medallion architecture initiatives
- Experience with cloud migration and modernization programs
- Familiarity with healthcare APIs and secure data-sharing frameworks
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate

This is an office/remote position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a climate-controlled environment. Candidates must be able to sit, read, work on a computer, and watch a computer screen for extended periods of time. Occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, kneel or crouch.
