Solid Waste Technician II

About the role

The Mecklenburg County Solid Waste is seeking a customer focused person to staff our William Davie Recycling Center. This individual will guide customers in their recycling activities at this recycling center embedded in the William Davine Park. This position will work to keep the grounds of the center clean and tidy and track the amounts of materials that residents drop-off.

Responsibilities

• Direct traffic flow of vehicles entering solid waste acceptance centers to the proper area to unload
• Assure that refuse remains in the area is not hauled away as salvage
• Perform vehicle load inspections and monitors incoming loads for unacceptable materials
• Keep work area clean and free of debris to prevent damage to incoming vehicles
• Assist with evaluating solid waste at solid waste centers or landfill for acceptability or correct location
• Aid in cleaning and maintenance of trucks and tools
• May load and unload heavy material from trucks and vans using forklifts or manual methods when applicable
• Move and aid in moving furniture or equipment and large and bulky objects
• Maintain grounds keeping such as picking up trash and debris
• Monitor the safety of the job site with consideration of customers and co-workers
• May operate non-CDL required vehicles as needed

Requirements

• Minimum of two years of experience
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• May require a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
• May require county Driving Privileges
• May require Powered Truck Certification (Forklift)

Qualifications

• Bilingual skills preferred
• Basic computer skills are desired
• Experience operating light equipment such as skid-steer loaders, backhoes and riding mowers
• Ability to obtain a CDL
• Knowledge of light equipment used in maintenance, grounds keeping, solid waste and construction
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to safe operation of equipment, tools and industrial/construction settings
• Knowledge of basic tools used in maintenance and construction work
• Knowledge of communication methods with customers
• Knowledge of safe work practices
• Knowledge of operating power tools such as, blowers, sweepers, mowers, saws and other devices
• Knowledge of operating light motorized equipment, such as skid-steer loaders, riding mowers and industrial trucks (forklifts)
• Knowledge of performing manual labor, sometimes in adverse weather conditions
• Knowledge of adapting to changes in work responsibilities or environments
• Knowledge of contributing to team success
• Knowledge of managing work
• Knowledge of identifying and correcting conditions that affect employee safety
• Knowledge of upholding safety standards
• Knowledge of technical/professional skills in position-related areas
• Knowledge of basic understanding of applicable computer programs
• Knowledge of familiarity using two way radios, smart phones and electronic equipment

• High aptitude of mechanical skills
• Ability to obtain a CDL
• Ability to obtain solid waste operations certificate for landfill or compost operations

Pay

This is an non-exempt (hourly) position. Pay rates are based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity. Internal equity considerations include an assessment of the applicant’s salary history and qualifications in comparison to the market rate and requirements for the job. Salary Range: $25.53 - $25.72/hourly
