About the role
The Solid Waste Equipment Operator is responsible for operating a variety of motorized equipment in the collection and disposal of municipal solid waste under the general supervision of the Solid Waste Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Operate a variety of solid waste collection equipment, including rear-end load truck, semi-automated rural rear-end load truck, open-top brush/rubbish truck, and boom-type brush/rubbish truck, on an assigned daily route.
- Ensure the safety of others, city equipment, and private property by following proper safety procedures and watching for pedestrians, overhead utility lines, and other obstructions.
- Check daily work assignments, maintain and document a daily route sheet of collection information, and notify customers of collection issues using tagging procedures.
- Report collection-related service issues and/or concerns, and perform routine checks on collection equipment to ensure operational efficiency and good operating condition.
- Perform preventative maintenance checks, identify and report equipment malfunctions, and clean assigned collection vehicles as needed.
- Perform daily pre-trip/post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles and report any minor/major repairs to the fleet shop as needed.
- Assure mobile camera system operational functionality and sequence new customer accounts.
- Report collection issues, complete documentation for customer service verification in the vehicle routing system, and report any personnel injuries, vehicle incidents, or damage to property or containers to the immediate supervisor.
- Participate in all required training, including safety, environmental compliance, and hazardous waste identification.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- State of Texas Class “B” Commercial Drivers License (CDL).
- Available for emergency response and catastrophic weather events.
- Available for after-hour support as needed and/or required, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two (2) years’ experience driving a commercial vehicle.
- Previous work experience in solid waste collection operations.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Basic computer competency.
Supplemental Information
Current CDL holders are eligible for a $1,500 hire-on bonus. Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this position, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy.
