Software Engineering Manager
About the role
The Engineering Manager of Software and Web Platforms is responsible for leading the software engineering and web development functions that support new product development, connected product platforms, digital tools, and customer-facing or internal applications. This role provides technical and organizational leadership across software architecture, application design, web technologies, system integration, verification and validation, deployment, release management, cybersecurity alignment, and ongoing lifecycle support.
This position manages and develops software engineers, web developers, and related technical contributors to ensure effective execution of business, customer, and product objectives. The role requires strong people-leadership, disciplined software development practices, sound technical judgment, and effective collaboration with embedded systems, hardware engineering, product management, IT, cybersecurity, quality, operations, and other business stakeholders.
This position will be filled at either our Mirabel, QC or Washington, MO location and is an onsite role; remote work is not available.
Responsibilities
- Lead the improvement of existing software products, platforms, and applications, as well as the development of new software-enabled product derivatives, to meet defined customer, business, technical, cybersecurity, usability, quality, and compliance requirements.
- Provide leadership and direction for assigned software engineering team(s), including embedded software, application software, web development, cloud-connected systems, software tools, and related technical functions.
- Manage, coach, and develop direct reports responsible for software development, web development, embedded software, software testing, software architecture, release management, and related engineering activities.
- Translate products, customer, business, regulatory, cybersecurity, data, usability, and technical requirements into software engineering plans, priorities, schedules, resource assignments, and deliverables.
- Lead software development activities for new products, product improvements, sustaining engineering, production support, field issue resolution, cost reduction, quality improvement, and digital product initiatives.
- Ensure software engineering projects meet established objectives for cost, schedule, technical performance, reliability, scalability, usability, maintainability, serviceability, cybersecurity, compliance, and customer satisfaction.
- Direct or delegate preparation and review of software engineering documentation, including design concepts, technical specifications, software architecture, interface specifications, cybersecurity documentation, test plans, validation plans, release plans, user-facing documentation, and engineering change documentation.
- Oversee software architecture, design, development, integration, verification, validation, deployment readiness, and lifecycle support for assigned products, platforms, applications, or systems.
- Ensure software designs comply with applicable Parker engineering standards, secure development practices, quality requirements, industry standards, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications.
- Lead software engineering planning activities, including project prioritization, resource allocation, sprint or milestone planning, backlog coordination, design reviews, release planning, project status reporting, and coordination with project management.
- Ensure effective change control for software releases, firmware releases where applicable, source code, configuration files, application documentation, technical records, release notes, and related engineering records.
- Support cybersecurity requirements, secure coding practices, vulnerability management, access control, data protection, threat assessment, incident response support, and compliance activities for connected products and digital platforms.
- Coordinate with hardware engineering, firmware engineering, cybersecurity, information technology, product management, project management, manufacturing, quality, operations, suppliers, and other internal or external stakeholders.
- Support Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Lean, Operations, service teams, and customers in resolving software-related production, test, application, integration, reliability, connectivity, and field performance issues.
- Maintain active risk avoidance and risk reduction activities for new and existing software products, including risks related to cybersecurity, reliability, data integrity, compliance, usability, product safety, field performance, supply chain dependencies, and product liability.
- Monitor software technologies, development tools, competitive products, cybersecurity trends, regulatory developments, digital platforms, and industry practices relevant to assigned software products and platforms.
- Support software release management, deployment planning, version control, backward compatibility, defect resolution, patch management, and lifecycle support for assigned software products.
- Support product liability investigations, customer issue analysis, warranty investigations, cybersecurity investigations, and lawsuit defense activities when required.
- Participate in budgeting, staffing plans, salary planning, performance reviews, software tool planning, capital planning, cloud or infrastructure planning, laboratory planning, and test environment planning.
- Develop, implement, and maintain software engineering policies, procedures, standards, workflows, coding guidelines, development practices, and best practices as required.
- Identify and submit cost reduction, cost avoidance, productivity improvement, quality improvement, software reliability improvement, cybersecurity improvement, or risk reduction actions.
- Perform other duties as responsibilities required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in science or engineering required.
- Requires at least five years of Engineering experience, additionally prefer at least five years of Supervisory experience or equivalent.
- Experience in refrigeration controls industry.
- Demonstrated knowledge of software development life cycle practices, including requirements definition, design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams and coordinate work across software, web development, manufacturing, quality, and product management functions.
- Working knowledge of engineering development processes, design reviews, project planning, validation, production support, engineering change control, and technical documentation.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, resolve technical and resource conflicts, and communicate effectively with leadership, peers, employees, customers, and suppliers.
- Must demonstrate effective organizational and verbal/written communication skills.
- PC Literate (AutoCAD, MS Word, Excel, Access, Project, Lotus Notes preferred).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing supervisors, technical leads, or multiple engineering disciplines.
- Experience with both physical product development and software-enabled or connected product development.
- Knowledge of hardware design, firmware development, embedded systems, software development life cycle practices, web technologies, cybersecurity, validation, and release management.
- Knowledge of and integration of C, C++ driven software algorithms preferred.
- Experience supporting manufacturing operations, supplier development, field issue resolution, quality improvement, and cost reduction programs.
- Familiarity with project management tools, CAD/EDA tools, software development tools, requirements management systems, and engineering change control systems.
- Experience in industrial, electromechanical, automation, or connected product environments.
