About the Role
Lockheed Martin Space is seeking a mid-career level HPC Software Engineer to work in a High Performance Computing (HPC) Research and Development (R&D) customer contract. As an active member of the Technical User Support (TUS) team, you will interact with team members, the TUS team lead, program Chief Scientist, customers, users, and site staff. The TUS team is responsible for working with HPC users to achieve faster "time to science."
You will work closely with users to port, optimize, and parallelize codes to meet their requirements. Additionally, you will mentor junior members of the TUS and broader HPC teams, providing technical guidance, conducting code-review sessions, and offering career-development advice. You will also design and deliver training workshops, tutorials, and documentation to help end-users and internal staff adopt HPC tools, best-practice coding standards, and performance-tuning techniques.
This role involves working on cutting-edge HPC technologies to ensure scientists and engineers can fully utilize modern HPC systems. You will plan, conduct, and coordinate software development activities, designing and developing software that contains logical and mathematical solutions to business and mission problems.
Responsibilities
- Port, optimize, and parallelize codes to meet user requirements in an HPC environment.
- Mentor junior engineers and scientists, providing technical guidance and conducting code review sessions.
- Design and deliver training workshops, tutorials, and documentation for HPC tools and best practices.
- Work closely with HPC users to streamline workflows and improve "time to science."
- Develop, document, test, and debug software containing logical and mathematical solutions.
- Apply appropriate standards, processes, and tools throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Analyze system capabilities, resolve program errors, and ensure software standards are met.
- Prepare operating instructions and compile documentation of program development.
- Maintain and debug existing codebases to ensure integrity and performance.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM-related discipline with a solid background in mathematics and/or physics.
- Minimum of 10 years of professional-level experience.
- Around 5 years of experience developing and using modeling and simulation software in heterogeneous, multi-platform environments.
- Experience with HPC users' workflows for modeling/simulation problems and GUIs.
- Proficiency in Fortran, C, and/or C++.
- Proficiency in BASH and Korn shell scripting.
- Linux Operating System proficiency, with the ability to solve end-user computer system problems independently.
- Strong ability to analyze, debug, and maintain existing codebases.
- Experience designing and delivering training or onboarding materials for HPC users and internal staff.
- Active Top Secret/SCI clearance with a CI Poly required to start.
Skills
- Knowledge of High Performance Computing (HPC) environments and related technologies.
- Proficiency in basic software practices such as coding standards, unit testing, and configuration management.
- Experience with Python and/or Perl scripting.
- Familiarity with revision control software (e.g., CVS, SVN, Git).
- Experience with build/install tools (e.g., CMake, Makefile, autoconf).
- GPU programming experience (e.g., CUDA, OpenCL) is a plus.
- Experience with Agile processes and tools like JIRA.
- AI/ML/Neural Networks experience is desirable.
- Strong organizational skills to balance and prioritize work.
- Excellent programming skills with attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills, results-oriented teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in AI prompting as it applies to this role.
Pay
Full-Time Salary Range: $148,300.00 - $275,500.00. The salary offered considers factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, and market considerations.
