Software Engineer Intern

About the Role
We are looking for a full-stack Software Engineer Intern to work directly with Caelon’s founding team on our active commercial real estate contracts. This is not a side project or a sandbox. You will be shipping code that live customers depend on, starting in your first week. Your day-to-day will center on the work that keeps our deployments healthy and our customers moving: responding to inbound tickets, fixing UI bugs, and implementing requested changes across the stack. You will see the full loop, from a customer raising an issue to your fix reaching production, and you will own that loop end to end.
You will work in a small, fast-moving environment with direct access to the founders. Priorities will shift, requirements will be ambiguous, and you will be trusted to make calls and defend them. We are open to new ideas, and we believe the only true failure is not trying or failing to learn from an experiment.
Responsibilities
- Own inbound tickets on our active commercial real estate contracts, from triage through to shipped fix.
- Diagnose and resolve UI bugs across our front-end surfaces.
- Implement customer-requested changes and enhancements across the full stack.
- Work directly with the founding team to scope, prioritize, and ship against live customer deadlines.
- Communicate clearly with the team on status, blockers, and tradeoffs.
- Learn Caelon’s platform and the workflows of the investment professionals who use it.
Requirements
- Full-stack technical ability. You are comfortable moving between front end, back end, and the glue in between.
- You have shipped a full-stack project end to end. It does not need to be commercial, but it needs to be real and it needs to have shipped.
- You can prove the benefit of what you built. Be ready to explain the problem it solved, who it helped, and how you know it worked.
- Comfortable working in Python, TypeScript, and Go.
- Comfortable working out of a ticket queue and holding yourself to your own turnaround times.
- Able to take ownership of ambiguous, open-ended problems and turn them into clear, useful outputs.
- Available 20–30 hours per week and able to be in person in Fairfax, Virginia.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience contributing to a production codebase with real users.
- Familiarity with commercial real estate, private markets, or financial data workflows.
- Familiarity with artificial intelligence tools and emerging technologies.
- Demonstrated excellence or exceptional achievement in a field or role, such as athletics, academics, research, entrepreneurship, or leadership.
- Experience working at an early-stage startup.
Schedule
- Hybrid, with in-person work at our office in Horizon Hall, GMU (4475 Aquia Creek Ln, Fairfax, VA 22030).
- Approximately 20–30 hours per week.
Pay
Compensation is a fixed monthly stipend for the two-month contract period.
Logistics
- This role begins with a one-week paid work trial. During the trial you will work alongside the founding team on live tickets from our active contracts, so both sides get an honest read on fit before committing. Strong performance in the trial converts directly into the two-month contract described above.
- Start date is as soon as possible. Candidates may start next week or immediately following the work trial.
- Caelon covers a cloud subscription for the duration of the contract.
- Extension beyond the two-month term is possible for the right person.
