About the role

The Merchant & Partner Lifecycle (M&PL) team at Affirm is transforming the company's architecture. You will lead the development of a new lifecycle-orchestrator service that integrates with multiple systems, focusing on scalability, performance, and modernization.

Responsibilities

  • Design and expand the backbone of our platform to handle hundreds of thousands of merchants worldwide
  • Collaborate with other teams to define and execute cross-team projects
  • Execute technical strategies for complex requirements, improving engineering standards and processes
  • Utilize tools like Claude Code to automate parts of the development process
  • Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes throughout the organization

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as a backend software engineer
  • Familiarity with Domain-Driven Design, distributed systems, and architectural performance and maintainability
  • Experience with data models, API design, state machines, event-driven architecture, and database design
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Proficiency in asynchronous communication, including writing tech specs, ADRs, and project plans
  • Experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems using AWS, gRPC, Snowflake, Kotlin, Python, MySQL, and Kubernetes
  • Prior experience with monitoring and alerting systems (Sentry.io, Rollbar, Chronosphere, Kibana)

Qualifications

  • Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field

Skills

  • Java and Kotlin experience are especially helpful

  • Equity Grade - 6

  • USA base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT) per year: $165,000 - $225,000
  • USA base pay range (all other U.S. states) per year: $146,000 - $206,000
  • Remote-first company with the option to work out of an Affirm office in proximal roles
