About the role
The Merchant & Partner Lifecycle (M&PL) team at Affirm is transforming the company's architecture. You will lead the development of a new lifecycle-orchestrator service that integrates with multiple systems, focusing on scalability, performance, and modernization.
Responsibilities
- Design and expand the backbone of our platform to handle hundreds of thousands of merchants worldwide
- Collaborate with other teams to define and execute cross-team projects
- Execute technical strategies for complex requirements, improving engineering standards and processes
- Utilize tools like Claude Code to automate parts of the development process
- Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes throughout the organization
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience as a backend software engineer
- Familiarity with Domain-Driven Design, distributed systems, and architectural performance and maintainability
- Experience with data models, API design, state machines, event-driven architecture, and database design
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Proficiency in asynchronous communication, including writing tech specs, ADRs, and project plans
- Experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems using AWS, gRPC, Snowflake, Kotlin, Python, MySQL, and Kubernetes
- Prior experience with monitoring and alerting systems (Sentry.io, Rollbar, Chronosphere, Kibana)
Qualifications
- Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
Skills
- Java and Kotlin experience are especially helpful

- USA base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT) per year: $165,000 - $225,000
- USA base pay range (all other U.S. states) per year: $146,000 - $206,000
- Remote-first company with the option to work out of an Affirm office in proximal roles
