Software Engineer (C++, API)

About the role

As a Level 6 (L6) Software Engineer at Waymo, you will play a critical role in owning and enhancing the C++ server infrastructure and concurrent data streaming pipelines that support the Waymo Driver platform. Your primary responsibility will be to design, develop, and optimize backend systems responsible for processing and streaming high-volume time-series logs, sensor data, and simulation information. You will work closely with cross-functional teams such as Perception, Behavior, and Simulation to ensure efficient data handling and visualization, enabling engineers to analyze driving data effectively. Your expertise will contribute to scaling infrastructure, improving latency and throughput, and maintaining system security and performance. Additionally, you will mentor junior engineers, review system designs, and establish best practices for systems-level C++ development. Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain concurrent C++ backend services (Borg/Boq RPC servers) that stream sensor and time-series data to clients
• Scale data delivery abstractions for offboard storage solutions such as CNS and Spanner, and WebRTC streaming
• Optimize system latency and throughput through log-sampling, payload post-processing, and asynchronous services
• Create backend APIs to support automated evaluation pipelines, triage bots, and rendering of driving scenes
• Plan and execute technical roadmaps, ensuring system scalability, security, and performance isolation
• Mentor junior engineers, review system designs, and establish best practices for C++ systems development

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
• Minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience in C++
• Strong background in systems programming, including multi-threading, concurrency, and memory optimization
• Experience building high-throughput, distributed systems, RPC services, or time-series data pipelines
• Proven ability to lead complex technical projects, design scalable systems, and mentor engineering teams
• Experience with profiling, performance tuning, and TDD methodologies
