Software Engineer (Apps)
WD is building the infrastructure behind the AI-driven data economy. As AI scales, so does data. Every interaction, every model, every system generates data that must be stored, managed, and made accessible over time. That’s where we come in. We combine deep engineering expertise with global-scale manufacturing to deliver the storage systems that make AI possible, powering hyperscale data centers, cloud platforms, and enterprise infrastructure worldwide. This isn’t theoretical work. It’s real systems, at real scale, people solving some of the hardest challenges in technology today. We’re looking for people who want to build, solve, and operate at that level. Join us and let’s shape the future of data.
About the role
Build the AI-powered tools that WD's engineers actually use every day. You'll own full-stack features end-to-end — from UI to database to AI/ML components — and your work will directly shape how next-gen storage devices are designed, tested, and manufactured.
This role is part of WD's early career development program, ideal for individuals at the early stages of their professional career. Participants receive foundational training through structured onboarding, mentorship, and a curated development curriculum. Responsibilities are typically aligned with candidates who have approximately 0–2+ years of relevant professional experience.
What you'll build
- AI features and automation workflows embedded in production engineering apps
- RAG-based pipelines and LLM integrations across tools like ADAM, WDFA, LIMS, and DRVM
- New tooling for monitoring HDD product telemetry data in real time
- Reusable AI/ML patterns deployable across the full DRI Tools portfolio
- Full-stack components spanning UI, REST APIs, backend services, and data layers
Tech Stack
- Language: Python
- AI/ML: LLMs, RAG Pipeline, Llama.cpp, Hugging Face, text embeddings, AI Harness (e.g., Claude Code)
- Front End: Web Apps: React, Tailwind CSS, Vite
- APIs: REST API design & development
- Data: SQL/MySQL, data pipelines, file I/O, text parsing
- DevOps: Git/Bitbucket, CI/CD, JIRA, Agile/Scrum
- Platforms: Linux, Mac, Windows
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and ship software tools — web, desktop, and CLI — in a large-scale enterprise engineering environment
- Own features from requirements → code → deployment
- Evaluate and integrate LLMs and embedding models into existing applications
- Build and expand automation and telemetry monitoring platforms
- Write clean, well-tested, maintainable Python code aligned to team standards
- Collaborate directly with HDD R&D and product engineering stakeholders to scope and ship solutions that reduce manual effort
- Stay current on open-source AI tooling and emerging frameworks
Qualifications
Required:
- Currently pursuing a BS degree in Computer Science or a related field
- Right to work in the US without requiring WD to commence or sponsor an immigration case in the future
- Proficiency in Python (full-stack development)
- Experience with REST API design and development
- Familiarity with SQL/MySQL and data pipeline development
- Understanding of AI/ML concepts — LLMs, embeddings, or RAG architectures
- Experience with version control and CI/CD workflows (Git/Bitbucket)
- Ability to work across the full stack: UI, API layer, database, and AI/ML components
Nice to have:
- Hands-on experience with AI frameworks and Harnesses
- Prior exposure to engineering or manufacturing software environments
- Experience with Agile/Scrum development practices
- Familiarity with telemetry data monitoring or failure analysis tooling
