About the role
Mid-level software engineers have moved beyond the early stages of learning the ropes of modern software development in agile, iterative, and continuously improving teams. They are journeymen level with a focus on refining mastery of their craft, developing areas of core expertise, and widening their technological repertoire through continuous learning—both taking and implementing feedback from peers, as well as providing it.
Focus: Consistent delivery, effective communication, continuous improvement, and strong technical competency.
Responsibilities
- Develop areas of core technical expertise to produce excellent, well-tested, and optimized code, as well as provide meaningful and actionable feedback to peers during pull request reviews.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders from product and other teams to refine requirements for new work items.
- Develop and own technical design documents for work items to understand potential pitfalls and define the architecture and design patterns necessary for execution.
- Understand and apply team coding standards, design patterns, and SDLC practices.
- Identify pain points in technology, tooling, and process, offering actionable constructive feedback or implementing improvements as feasible.
- Participate in mentoring more junior peers and sharing technical knowledge through code reviews and collaboration.
- Proactively communicate progress—both written async updates to the team and stakeholders, as well as via synchronous channels during stand-ups and regular touchpoints.
- Demonstrate growth in proficiency in the estimation process, showing confidence in estimating areas of core expertise and flagging risks in unfamiliar areas.
- Identify and communicate changes to expectations when new information arises or work scope shifts.
- Write automated tests (unit, integration, end-to-end when needed) as a standard practice.
- Contribute continuously to documentation and internal knowledge sharing.
- Show evidence of self-improvement and focus on growing core technical skills through research and sharing new knowledge with the team.
- Demonstrate responsiveness in team meetings and engagement in communication channels, proactively communicating blockers or new information without needing prompts.
- Operate with autonomy and responsibility in a fully remote environment, establishing and leveraging relationships with peers, stakeholders, and leaders to complete work with minimal oversight.
- Learn from incidents and feedback quickly, applying fixes rapidly (hours, not days).
