Software Development Engineer III
About the role
The Map Experience team within Expedia Group's Technology division is seeking a skilled engineer to design, build, and evolve complex, highly available services and applications. This role involves owning end-to-end delivery of features and services, ensuring reliability, scalability, and performance in production environments. Key responsibilities include applying strong coding practices, testing strategies, and code review standards, collaborating with cross-functional partners, and integrating and operating AI/ML-enabled solutions.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement service-level architectures, including clear APIs, data models, and low-level designs that integrate with other services and systems.
- Own end-to-end delivery of features and services from technical design through deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvement.
- Apply strong coding practices, testing strategies, and code review standards to deliver maintainable, secure, and observable software that can be safely changed and extended over time.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners to translate ambiguous product and business requirements into technical solutions, identifying trade-offs and driving alignment on design and implementation choices.
- Safely integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions that improve outcomes, including familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real-world products where appropriate.
- Provide technical mentorship within the team by sharing best practices in system design, API design, data modeling, and operational excellence, enabling reuse and fungibility of solutions across multiple domains.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience in software development.
- Several years of professional experience designing, implementing, and operating production software services or applications, including ownership of at least one significant service or feature area.
- Proven ability to design and implement service-level architectures, including clear APIs, data models, and low-level designs that integrate with other services and systems.
- Demonstrated proficiency in at least one modern programming language, along with experience in automated testing, CI/CD practices, and monitoring/alerting of production systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Front-end/library engineering: Strong JavaScript and TypeScript, with experience designing reusable libraries or SDKs and clean public APIs (event-driven models, config-driven behavior).
- React and modern component-library development (Storybook, design tokens, SCSS/CSS custom properties).
- Hands-on integration with third-party mapping SDKs (Google Maps and/or Mapbox GL) or comparable deep integration with a complex external JS SDK.
- Data & server-driven UI: GraphQL and Apollo, including fragments, deferred/suspense queries, and schema design.
- Experience with server-driven UI architectures and the SSR/CSR performance tradeoffs that come with them.
- Performance & experimentation: Demonstrable web-performance work (Core Web Vitals — LCP, CLS — profiling, and remediation).
- Comfort designing A/B experiments and interpreting results using analytics and observability tooling (RUM, log search, notebooks/dashboards).
- Cross-platform & Geospatial: Working knowledge of geospatial concepts: coordinate systems, GeoJSON, polygons and polyline encoding, clustering, viewport/bounds math, and map projection quirks.
- Engineering craft: Monorepo workflows (e.g., pnpm), CI/CD, artifact publishing, and disciplined dependency management.
- Testing rigor: unit, end-to-end (Cypress or similar), and visual regression.
- Accessibility fundamentals and a habit of building inclusively.
- Ownership mindset: comfortable operating a service in production, on-call, and leading incident response.
