About the role
The Harley-Davidson Motor Company Product Development Center (PDC) in Wauwatosa, WI is seeking a Software Design Engineer to drive the engine tuning software delivered in our Screamin’ Eagle Tuner product. In this position, you will lead the development and delivery of tuning software features that meet or exceed program-level requirements and provide regulatory compliance. You will work with an experienced cross-functional engineering team and suppliers to own the delivery of software features from initial algorithm selection through implementation and validation. This role involves delivering immediate project scope as well as preparing roadmaps to enhance current features and introduce new ones.
Responsibilities
- Drive the development and release of all software packages associated with the Screamin’ Eagle Tuning product, including embedded software, mobile and PC applications, and cloud services.
- Develop next-generation vehicle tuning requirements through collaboration with key stakeholders, product benchmarking, and input from industry standards.
- Decompose vehicle-level requirements and use-cases into component-level and software-level requirements.
- Lead physical and virtual feature evaluations to confirm confidence in software design prior to program milestones.
- Support the Reliability & Validation Engineer to ensure systematic verification of features by establishing requirements traceability, developing test-cases, and ensuring test coverage across applicable test methods.
- Review and approve software verification plans to ensure features are intuitive and robust at product launch.
- Resolve technical issues by applying problem-solving techniques and facilitating cross-functional support from the Engineering and Test Organizations.
- Support vehicle-level system integration activities including vehicle testing, regulatory homologation events, pre-production events, product launch, and product maintenance.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant design engineering experience or advanced education in a related field.
- Software development experience from concept through production launch of any product.
- Creative approach to solving problems, owning issue resolution from data collection, analysis, root cause identification, solution generation, and selection of optimal solution.
- Ability to work beyond software engineering and apply basic electro-mechanical and engine control principles to support component selection and signal conditioning strategies.
- Strong interest (direct experience desired) in motor vehicle or engine engineering and design (auto, motorcycle, truck & bus, agriculture, etc.).
- Experience authoring requirements, developing test-cases, and establishing traceability in a process that supports product development in accordance with relevant industry best practices.
- Experience with Quality Engineering deliverables, including DFMEAs and Design Validation Plans and Test Reports.
- Experience supporting production release of software features to ensure consistent production and diagnostics for the service team.
- Success coordinating teams of internal stakeholders and suppliers to meet aggressive quality and performance objectives.
- Ability to lead and influence cross-functional team members without direct authority.
- Ability to communicate technical subjects clearly and concisely to multiple levels of the organization.
- Ability to work with diverse global teams both internally and externally (suppliers).

- Knowledge of engine and vehicle dynamics (specifically as this applies to motorcycles).
- Experience with engine calibration/engine tuning.
- Experience in the practical application of control theories.
- Experience with vehicle functions such as cruise control, traction control, ADAS, suspension control, etc.
- Experience with on-vehicle test, calibration, and/or feature evaluation.
- Knowledge of whole-vehicle systems with detailed electrical system/component choice, software algorithm design & integration experience.
- Proven technical knowledge and design experience of existing vehicle technologies as well as awareness of future vehicle technologies, with an ability to inform future product capabilities.

Pay
The pay range shown represents the national average pay range for this role. Your pay may be more or less than the stated range and is dependent on your geographic location and level of experience. Pay range: $74,900 - $112,200.
Schedule
Full-time, onsite at the Product Development Center in Wauwatosa, WI. Travel required: 10 - 25%.
