Full-time position with Randolph County Social Services.

Pay

$60,155.91 - $65,668.00 annually

Sign-on bonus: $2,000 - $4,000 depending on position and qualifications.

About the role

This is an advanced, professional-level casework position providing protective, investigative, counseling, and case management services for children at risk of neglect, abuse, and/or dependency. The role involves immediate response to crisis situations in complex cases, including investigation, assessment, court testimony, and follow-up services.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and respond to referrals requiring social work assessment or intervention, initiating investigations or assessments within timeframes defined by NC General Statutes and CPS policy.
  • Petition the court for immediate custody of children when they are at risk and arrange placement in licensed foster homes or approved relative placements.
  • Maintain cases, including required contacts and documentation, until transfer to a foster care social worker is complete.
  • Conduct investigations and assessments through interviews, home visits, collateral contacts, and other fact-finding methods in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Prepare social histories, family assessments, and document findings within legal definitions of abuse, neglect, or dependency.
  • Determine case disposition (e.g., substantiation of abuse/neglect/dependency, need for services) and recommend appropriate interventions to ensure child safety.
  • Inform clients of available programs and services, encouraging participation in appropriate activities.
  • Complete investigations and assessments within required timeframes, including transfers to foster care, in-home services, or case closure.
  • Maintain detailed, professional, and up-to-date case records, including contacts with children, parents, and collaterals (e.g., extended family, school personnel, medical/mental health professionals).
  • Use prescribed tools, forms, and technology systems (e.g., electronic case management, NC FAST) for documentation and reporting.
  • Perform on-call duties as assigned.
  • Provide court reports and expert testimony as required.
  • Build collaborative relationships across the organization, seek win-win solutions, and display empathy while tolerating diverse viewpoints.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited school of social work and one year of social work experience; or
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of social work and two years of social work or counseling experience; or
  • Master’s degree in a counseling field and two years of social work or counseling experience; or
  • Four-year degree in a human services field or related curriculum and three years of social work or counseling experience; or
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university and four years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling, or a related human service field; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (one year of work experience can be credited for completion of the social work collaborative).
