Social Worker – Foster Care (Investigative, Assessment, & Treatment)
Halifax County Social Services staff are required to staff emergency shelters during times of disaster as part of the Halifax County Emergency Operations Plan. Every staff person is eligible to be assigned to an emergency shelter or Emergency Operations Center.
About the role
The person in this position is responsible for providing social work services to children and the parents/caretakers whose children have been placed in the custody of the Department of Social Services through the Courts as a result of abuse, neglect, and/or dependency. Responsibilities include helping parents/caretakers overcome barriers to achieving permanence with their children, evaluating and arranging substitute care, supervising placements, maintaining family contact, transporting children and parents/caretakers, testifying in court, and being on-call after hours/weekends to assess situations of abuse, neglect, and/or dependency.
Requirements
Qualifications include any of the following combinations:
- Master’s degree from an accredited school of social work and one year of social work experience;
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of social work and two years of social work or counseling experience;
- Master’s degree in a counseling field and two years of social work or counseling experience;
- Four-year degree in a human services field or related curriculum and three years of social work or counseling experience;
- Graduation from a four-year college or university and four years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling, or related human service field providing experience in casework, group work, or community organization.
Additional requirements include possession of a driver’s license valid in the state of North Carolina. A criminal background check and pre-employment drug test (with negative results) are required prior to hiring. Employment is limited to U.S. citizens or legal aliens authorized to work in the United States.

Pay
The hiring range for this position is $52,624–$58,850.
