Minimum Qualifications by Classification

  • Law Clerk / County Counsel: Graduation from an accredited law school by the start date of the fellowship. Eligibility to take for the California Bar Examination or awaiting bar results. No prior experience as a practicing attorney required.
  • Attorney I - County Counsel - U: Membership in the California State Bar. No prior post-bar legal practice experience required.
  • Attorney II - County Counsel - U: Membership in the California State Bar. One (1) year of full-time practice experience as an attorney, judicial law clerk, or legal advisor.
  • Attorney III - County Counsel - U: Membership in the California State Bar. Three (3) years of full-time practice experience as an attorney, judicial law clerk, or legal advisor.

Fellowship Application Process and Deadline

To apply, please send a resume, cover letter describing your experience and interest in working through local government to advance the public interest, legal writing sample, list of three references, and unofficial law school transcript to our Fellowship Hiring Committee at fellowship@cco.sccgov.org. Applications must be submitted by Friday, August 28, 2026.
