Legal Fellowship

Job Summary

Northwest Justice Project (NJP) invites third-year law students and recent law graduates to apply for a two-year public interest legal fellowship starting in 2027. The fellow will work on expanding NJP’s capacity to confront poverty and advocate for consumer protection needs of Washington’s low-income communities.

Responsibilities

• Develop a two-year project to expand NJP’s consumer advocacy efforts
• Collaborate with NJP to shape strategic consumer advocacy initiatives
• Gain hands-on experience in a supportive and mentoring environment
• Work with low-income communities, diverse legal partners, social service providers, and community advocates
• Work with low-income clients on legal matters through clinical, volunteer, or past employment roles
• Travel throughout the geographic service area of the project
• Use strong oral and written communication skills
• Manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment

Requirements

• Washington State Bar Association membership in good standing, the ability to acquire membership through admission by motion, or ability to take the next Washington bar exam before fall 2027
• Demonstrated commitment to public interest law, legal aid or advocacy for low-income individuals and communities impacted by poverty
• Ability to work collaboratively with low-income communities, diverse legal partners, social service providers, and community advocates
• Experience working with NJP’s client communities, including low-income client communities, communities of color, people with disabilities, and limited English speakers
• Experience working with low-income clients on legal matters through clinical, volunteer, or past employment roles preferred
• Reliable transportation and willingness to travel throughout the geographic service area of the project

Qualifications

• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Well-developed legal research skills
• Strong time management skills

Benefits

The fellow will receive a salary based upon years of experience, with a hiring range of $83,548 to $146,692. This is an exempt position. NJP also offers a comprehensive benefits package, which includes 100% paid employee health premiums and significant premium shares for family health premiums, as well as generous time off.

Schedule

The fellow will work a standard full-time schedule.
