Responsibilities
Spring, Summer, Fall
- Coordinate trail crew and complete trail maintenance, including erosion control, mowing, bridge and culvert construction, and clearing trail edges
- Hire, train, and supervise trail crew members; maintain attendance records and schedules; conduct disciplinary actions when appropriate
- Maintain inventory and upkeep of trail crew equipment (e.g., chainsaws, brush trimmers)
- Ensure safety procedures are followed and PPE is worn during all trail operations
- Coordinate trail-related projects, including bridge repairs, lift line clearing, and mountain bike trail construction and maintenance (Alpine and Nordic)
- Purchase and receive equipment/supplies; monitor monthly budget expenses
- Conduct grounds and property maintenance, including lawn care, parking lot maintenance, and hazard tree removal
- Monitor trail conditions to improve drainage and erosion issues
- Plan and perform pre-season snowmaking maintenance, including hydrant and pipe maintenance, hose inspection, tower/fan/land gun maintenance, and equipment inventory
- Complete major snowmaking repairs, pipe installation, tower gun installations, and pumphouse maintenance
- Perform preventive maintenance on pumps and compressors; inspect water pumps, compressors, valve stations, tower guns, and lines before season start-up
- Set up trails for snowmaking season
- Assist other mountain operations departments as needed
Winter
- Hire and train snowmakers for all shifts, including snowmobile safe driving techniques
- Supervise snowmaking shift leaders; ensure training and safety procedures are followed
- Set up valves and piping for water and air flow
- Ensure safety procedures are adhered to and PPE is worn at all times
- Monitor snow quality and efficient output; adjust guns for optimal snow production
- Move guns to ensure full trail coverage; determine and perform maintenance needs
- Conduct start-up/shut-down procedures and monitor iSno systems
- Monitor pump and compressor operations; perform necessary maintenance
- Hire, train, and supervise grooming team; conduct daily checks of grooming conditions and provide feedback
- Monitor weather forecasts to make grooming and snowmaking decisions
- Work grooming shifts after snowmaking season ends
- Ensure grooming equipment is in working order with maintenance crew
- Assist other mountain operations as needed
- Work with upper management on capital and major planned maintenance projects to align with budget
Requirements
- 5+ years in ski area mountain operations
- Ability to work outside in extreme winter conditions on a 24-hour basis
- Ability to walk up and down steep mountain terrain
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs
- Ability to safely maneuver on snow and ice
- Experience operating brush/chain saws, snowmobiles, and 4-wheelers
- Ability to make decisions regarding changing weather conditions and snow quality without supervision
- Experience operating heavy equipment, including grooming machines, excavators, skid steer loaders, and backhoes
- Proficiency with computer systems (Outlook, Excel, Word); ability to learn payroll processing and purchasing software
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to work as a team player in a fast-paced environment
