About the role

Small Commercial Underwriting Technicians support various Underwriting functions in partnership with assigned Underwriters. This is a full-time, non-exempt role. Technicians prepare and provide key data, follow up on outstanding issues, and make recommendations to assigned Underwriters to help manage a profitable book of business.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily support to Underwriting in managing underwriting transactions, service standards, agency relationships, and compliance rules and documentation.
  • Perform standard duties under general supervision, including account triage, risk acceptability, file preparation, and basic to moderate complexity analysis of underwriting transactions (report ordering, file documentation, agency communications).
  • Coordinate multiple deliverables to achieve service standards and underwriting guidelines.
  • Provide accurate rating instructions for high-quality output.
  • Build and demonstrate knowledge of underwriting systems, workflows, compliance rules, lines of business, and coverages to support Small Commercial Lines underwriting functions.
  • Execute within guidelines per UT Authority level granted; escalate issues to underwriters and managers as appropriate.
  • Develop proficiency in basic underwriting analysis, file preparation, report assessment, and compliance rules.
  • Learn territorial differences and business strategies for growth and profitability.
  • Build and maintain close working relationships with agents, underwriters, and peers.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree preferred and/or 1-2 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Ability to develop an understanding of basic exposure/control analysis and coverage.
  • Basic underwriting knowledge and awareness of how various roles/functions fit together.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to leverage available resources.
  • Service-oriented with a high level of responsiveness.
  • Ability to self-manage workload to meet underwriting goals and service standards.
  • Effective communication with internal and external partners, both verbally and in writing.

The target hiring range for this role may vary based on geographic location and other factors, including merit or performance, demonstrated proficiency, skills, education, travel requirements, and experience.
