About the role
A laborer/Fire watch will assist with various manual needs of the construction work being performed on a Combined Cycle Power Plant, including moving equipment, digging, retrieving equipment, standing by for fire safety, and any other work instructed by a supervisor or journeyman.
Responsibilities
- Perform a large range of manual activities such as moving equipment, digging, retrieving equipment, and standing by for fire safety.
- Use a fire extinguisher.
- Climb structures and scaffolding.
- Use rigging and hoisting devices (e.g., chokers, chain falls, come-alongs) to move equipment or materials into place.
- Conduct preventative maintenance, including lubrication and repairing worn parts.
- Follow directions from supervisors.
Requirements
- Meet all physical demands of the role (see Physical Requirements).
- Experience using industrial hand tools and power tools.
- Reliable transportation and ability to work 7 days a week as needed.
Physical Requirements
- Adhere to large amounts of standing, walking, bending, squatting, and lifting.
- Communicate effectively through talking and hearing.
- Good dexterity with hands and fingers for precision adjustments of machinery parts and controls.
- Use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, or pull objects, materials, controls, and tools.
- Lift, carry, and move up to 50 lbs.
- Occasionally work at heights, climb ladders and stairways, and work off platforms.
- Use vision abilities for focus, short/long distances, colors, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
- Work outside in various elements (heat, cold, rain, snow, wind) for long periods (up to 12 hours a day).
- Wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves, and steel-toe boots.

- Basic knowledge of hand tools and power tools.
- Good problem-solving abilities and manual dexterity.
- Good reading comprehension.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Good communication skills with co-workers and supervisors.
- Commitment to safety rules and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Zachry/JVIC ROF’ed employee or former Zachry/JVIC employee.
- Basic mechanical knowledge.
- Experience on an industrial construction site.
- Formal or technical education.
