About the role

Responsible for performing tasks involving physical labor at building, highway, and heavy construction projects, tunnel and shaft excavations, and demolition sites. Operates hand and power tools of all types, including air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and a variety of other equipment and instruments. Duties include cleaning and preparing sites, digging trenches, cleaning up rubble, and assisting other craft workers.

Responsibilities

• Performs any combination of duties to assist in general labor and fire watch duties.
• Moves work pieces, tools, and supplies manually or by hand truck.
• Lifts, moves, and holds or clamps work pieces to table, into jigs, or into position as directed, manually or using hoist, pry bars, wrenches, hammer, and wedges.
• Cleans work pieces to remove impurities such as slag, rust, and grease using wire brush, portable grinder, hand scraper, or chemical solutions.
• Connects hoses from hand torch to oxygen and fuel gas cylinders or connects cables from power source to electrode holder and work piece or fixture.
• Starts engine to activate electric generators.
• Removes, tags or marks, and moves finished work.
• Under supervision, may attach grappling equipment to objects preparatory to movement by crane.
• Digs trenches, places shoring, and lowers tools and materials to workers in excavations and vaults.
• Gathers tools and supplies to be used at work site, according to instructions.
• Carries various tools, supplies, and equipment.
• Assists in maintaining, repairing, rebuilding, and fabricating metal equipment.
• Learns to maintain equipment and work with tools of the trade.
• May be required to perform other general maintenance or repair tasks.
• Obtains, stores, and safeguards supplies, materials, and equipment.
• Determines methods and materials needed to accomplish assigned maintenance, repair, or construction.
• Performs fire watch and hole watch duties, including proper placement of fire blankets, operating fire extinguishers, and initiating emergency response actions.
• Works in operating facilities and observes additional safety policies and procedures.
• Other duties as assigned by Foreman or Superintendent.

Requirements

• 0-6 months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledgeable of MIC Health and Safety programs and project-specific regulations.
• Actively participates in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors.
• Sets a personal example of safe behavior.
• Reads and interprets documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Performs basic arithmetic: adds and subtracts two-digit numbers, multiplies and divides with 10's and 100's, and uses units of weight measurement and volume.
• Applies common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
• Able to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards.

Physical Demands

• Works up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical work in varying temperatures and outside conditions.
• Maintains physical strength and stamina; uses arms, hands, and legs fully.
• Pushes, pulls, and frequently lifts and carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Stoops, kneels, balances, crouches, crawls, and climbs to perform job tasks.
• Performs tasks repetitively and continuously for several hour intervals.
• Works in uncontrolled environmental conditions with constant changes in weather and site conditions.
• Exposure to moderate elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
• Wears personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety-toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hardhat, and vest.
• Moves in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas.
• Works at heights and abides by all safety and fall-protection requirements; wears and utilizes all required safety equipment.
• Evaluates information based on measurable standards and sees details in objects or drawings, recognizing slight differences in shapes and shadings.
• Visualizes objects in three dimensions from drawings.

Pay

$21.00 / hour, commensurate with experience.

Schedule

Full-time position scheduled to work typically 50 hours per week. Schedule is subject to project requirements.
