About the Role

The successful candidate will provide advanced small animal surgical care while contributing to the continued development of a modern academic referral surgery service. Initial responsibilities will focus on clinical service development, caseload growth, hospital collaboration, and strengthening relationships with regional referring veterinarians.

Small Animal Surgery at SSVM

The Small Animal Surgery Service is central to SSVM's mission of providing exceptional specialty care while preparing graduates to confidently manage surgical patients within collaborative healthcare teams. The service is designed to:

The Surgery Service is supported by a modern Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital featuring advanced diagnostic and surgical resources, including:

• Dedicated surgical suites
• Advanced anesthesia and pain management
• GE 3 Tesla MRI
• 128-slice CT scanner
• Digital radiography
• Ultrasonography
• Clinical pathology laboratory

Responsibilities

• Provide advanced soft tissue and orthopedic surgical care for companion animal patients
• Perform elective and emergency surgical procedures
• Collaborate with Primary Care, Urgent Care, and specialty clinicians to provide comprehensive patient care
• Build relationships with regional referring veterinarians
• Develop clinical protocols, quality improvement initiatives, and workflow processes
• Participate in development of the surgical curriculum and pre-clinical educational experiences
• Prepare for future clinical teaching and mentorship of veterinary students
• Engage in scholarly activity and collaborative clinical research
• Contribute positively to a collaborative and supportive hospital culture

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree
• Board certification or board eligibility through the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or equivalent
• Eligibility for veterinary licensure in New Jersey
• Demonstrated expertise in companion animal soft tissue and orthopedic surgery
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary specialty hospital
• Adaptability, initiative, and enthusiasm for helping build a growing academic surgery service

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous teaching, mentoring, or academic experience
• Interest in surgical education and curriculum development
• Interest in clinical research or scholarly activity
• Experience developing surgical protocols or quality improvement initiatives
• Interest in advancing academic referral surgery within a collaborative environment

Pay

The anticipated salary range for this position is $150,000–$290,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications, experience, clinical expertise, academic rank, appointment track, and appointment percentage.

Academic Appointment

This is an open-rank faculty appointment (Instructor through Full Professor) available on either the Clinical Track or Tenure Track, depending on qualifications, experience, and professional goals. Both full-time and part-time appointments will be considered. Faculty rank, appointment track, responsibilities, and effort allocation will be determined at the time of appointment based on the successful candidate's qualifications, career interests, and the needs of the School.
