About the Role

The successful candidate will provide high-quality medical and surgical care for zoological companion animal patients while contributing to the continued development of a modern academic Zoo & Exotics Service. Initial responsibilities will focus on clinical service development, curriculum design, learner preparation, and hospital operations. As the DVM program matures, this position will naturally evolve to include structured clinical teaching and supervision, with anticipated student participation beginning in approximately two years. Previous academic experience is welcome but not required.

Faculty joining during SSVM's startup phase will play a foundational role in:

• Developing pre-clinical exotic animal curriculum and applied learning experiences
• Establishing clinical workflows, standard operating procedures, and service identity for the Zoo & Exotics Service
• Preparing for the launch of formal clinical teaching as students transition into the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital

About The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine at Rowan University is one of the nation's newest colleges of veterinary medicine and is committed to advancing veterinary education, patient care, research, and community engagement. Since welcoming its inaugural DVM class in 2025 and second class in 2026, SSVM has experienced rapid growth and continues to expand its academic programs, clinical services, research enterprise, and faculty.

Zoo and Exotics at SSVM

The Zoo and Exotics Service is housed within the new SSVM Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in Mullica Hill, New Jersey. The service will provide comprehensive care for exotic animal patients, including outpatient care, diagnostics, procedures, and inpatient management. The Service currently has wards and equipment to accommodate small mammal, avian, reptile, amphibian, and aquatic patients, along with:

• A full complement of diagnostic services including in-house clinical pathology, digital radiology, ultrasonography, computed tomography, and endoscopy
• Dedicated surgical and dental equipment and sterile surgical suites
• An on-site pharmacy

The hospital is designed to support collaborative, multidisciplinary care and currently includes specialty services such as diagnostic imaging (GE CT and 3T MRI), dentistry and oral surgery, primary care, ophthalmology, cardiology, and emergency and critical care, with anesthesia, internal medicine, oncology, dermatology, and surgery to follow.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive veterinary care for exotic animal patients
• Manage exotic animal intakes, diagnostics, procedures, and inpatient care
• Contribute to the design and delivery of pre-clinical didactic content in exotic animal medicine and surgery
• Coordinate and support hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for clinical training
• Teach and supervise DVM students, interns, and residents as clinical teaching begins
• Collaborate with specialty and hospital services to support integrated patient care
• Participate actively in service development, SOPs, workflow design, and teaching hospital planning

Requirements

• DVM or equivalent degree
• Demonstrated expertise in exotic animal medicine and surgery
• Strong clinical focus in small mammal companion animal and/or avian species
• Eligible for licensure in the State of New Jersey
• Interest in teaching and academic program development
• Collaborative, adaptable, and comfortable working in a startup environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Board-Eligible or Board-Certified in one of the following:
  • ABVP – Exotic Companion Mammal
  • ABVP – Avian
  • ABVP – Reptile/Amphibian
  • American College of Zoological Medicine (any subspecialty)
  • European College of Zoological Medicine (any subspecialty)

Pay

The anticipated salary range for this position is $100,000–$175,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications, experience, clinical expertise, academic rank, and appointment track.

Academic Appointment

This is an open-rank faculty appointment (Instructor through Full Professor) available on either the Clinical Track or Tenure Track, depending on qualifications, experience, and professional goals.
