About the Role
The SLH Nurse Manager coordinates the management of nursing care within the department in accordance with approved Nursing Standards, regulatory requirements, and System policies and procedures. The role ensures safe, effective, and appropriate patient care in a cost-effective manner.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrates awareness of self-learning needs and seeks ways to maintain current competency and respond to new clinical and management demands.
- Demonstrates effective leadership skills, including delegation, organization, and coordination of the department; delegates responsibilities to designated staff as appropriate.
- Develops and maintains effective communication mechanisms within the department with staff, physicians, patients, families, and other departments.
- Functions as a role model to all employees in the department.
- Demonstrates competency in clinical judgment, selected technical skills, and appropriate knowledge base; provides clinical direction to staff and evaluates the level of care provided.
- Ensures adherence to safety and legal requirements established at the System, Hospital, and Department levels.
- Collaborates in planning and participates in the clinical and leadership development of employees in the department.
- Oversees the planning and implementation of quality assessment activities; inputs data in Med Marx, monitors, and maintains notification forms.
- Participates in the interview, selection, and orientation process for all new employees.
- Directs efforts at retention by maintaining staff and minimizing turnover.
- Clarifies job roles, establishes challenging but achievable expectations and standards, and enriches jobs to motivate staff and improve department functioning.
- Promotes teamwork, evaluates individual performance, and mentors employees for effectiveness and professional growth.
- Prepares the annual budget, justifies budgetary requests, and supervises the preparation of various cost reports.
- Communicates important system-level and hospital-specific information to staff; ensures staff is informed of updates and changes in policies and procedures.
- Manages the staff schedule for the department in accordance with staffing pattern ratios and personnel availability; adjusts schedules as needed in coordination with the staffing coordinator.
Requirements
- Five years of progressive nursing experience.
- Graduate of an accredited Nursing School.
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
Qualifications
- Preferred Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Preferred Experience: Two years of managerial experience.
