About the role
The Sleep Technician is responsible for all the Sleep Medicine Center procedures in accordance with NCH policy and procedure and guidelines set forth by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).
Responsibilities
- Measure (10/20 system) and locate the appropriate cephalic lead locations.
- Perform complete patient set-ups including all leads, belts and monitors.
- Perform all sleep study procedures (PSG, CPAP titrations, Split-Night, MSLT, MWT) according to lab protocol.
- Provide patient and family education regarding sleep disorders, the test procedures, how to communicate during the test and what to do in case of an emergency.
- Thorough knowledge of the Sandman Sleep computer system including entering a new patient, recalling patient data, completing patient reports and setting up the display.
- Archive patient studies, burn CD’s and transmit studies for scoring.
- Provide basic emergency airway management including bag-valve-mask ventilation.
- Recognize the need for emergency intervention in the event sleep patients develop respiratory distress or other compromise during a study.
- Maintain artifact free recordings and make every effort to correct poor data quality.
- Provide accurate and thorough documentation on the sleep study to enable physician interpretation.
- Document an accurate patient history on all recordings to include history of illness, medications, and recording interventions.
- Properly mask fit patients who undergo CPAP testing.
- Set-up and control all sleep center CPAP/BiPAP devices.
- Actively assist and support departmental activities to ensure that operational and salary expenses are equal to or less than approved budget.
- Understand the principles and concepts of Performance Improvement.
- Look for opportunities and solutions for process improvements and seek to improve job skills.
- Maintain the principles of confidentiality.
- Understand the legal/regulatory requirements related to the release of information.
- Able to use the information systems pertinent to the job.
Qualifications
- Minimum of High School Diploma or GED required.
- Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or Certified Polysomnographic Technologist (CPSGT) required.
- Must complete the basic cardiology (EKG) course within 12 months of hire.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
- Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
