About the Role

The Skilled Tradesman supervises specialized trail maintenance along the 84-mile Delta Heritage Trail, working closely with the Assistant Superintendent to plan and execute trail projects including bridge repair, resurfacing, erosion mitigation, herbicide application, and vegetation management. This position oversees the operation, maintenance, and repair of heavy equipment, power tools, and maintenance vehicles. The trail is large and remote, with a 2-hour drive from end to end and limited cell phone signal. This highly active role requires frequent travel by truck, UTV, bicycle, or on foot to supervise crews, inspect the trail and trailheads, and respond to maintenance needs.

Responsibilities

• Perform specialized trail maintenance, including bridge repair, resurfacing, erosion mitigation, herbicide application, and vegetation management.
• Supervise multiple maintenance teams and lead crews in trail maintenance or similar outdoor operations.
• Oversee operation, maintenance, and repair of heavy equipment, power tools, and maintenance vehicles.
• Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance to identify potential issues.
• Maintain and repair tools, machinery, and equipment used in trade-related tasks.
• Operate a variety of hand and power tools, as well as heavy equipment such as UTVs and trucks.
• Interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings for installations and repairs.
• Diagnose issues, determine solutions, and execute repairs efficiently.
• Maintain accurate records of materials used, work completed, and repairs performed.
• Work closely with other trades professionals, contractors, and agency staff to complete projects.
• Provide guidance or training to apprentices or less experienced workers when necessary.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• At least two (2) years of experience in one or more skilled trades, such as trail maintenance, equipment repair, or similar outdoor operations.
• Supervisory experience leading crews in trail maintenance or related fields.
• Experience working independently in remote environments.
• Demonstrated leadership, decision-making, and ability to prioritize multiple projects.
• Commercial Driver’s License preferred.

Qualifications

• Advanced knowledge and experience in trail maintenance, equipment repair, or related trades.
• Ability to interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
• Knowledge of preventative maintenance techniques to extend the lifespan of equipment and infrastructure.
• Trade-related certifications (e.g., equipment operation, herbicide application) may be required if mandated by the trade.

Pay

Salary range: $52,137 – $77,163
