About the Role

The Skilled Tradesman is responsible for specialized trail maintenance along the 84-mile Delta Heritage Trail. This position supervises multiple maintenance teams and works closely with the Assistant Superintendent to plan and execute trail projects including bridge repair, resurfacing, erosion mitigation, herbicide application, and vegetation management. The position also oversees the operation, maintenance, and repair of heavy equipment, power tools, and maintenance vehicles.

Delta Heritage Trail is large and remote, with a 2-hour drive from end to end and limited cell phone signal. This is a highly active position requiring frequent travel by truck, UTV, bicycle, or on foot to supervise crew, inspect the trail and trailheads, and respond to maintenance needs.

The Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism has three major divisions: Arkansas State Parks, Arkansas Heritage, and Arkansas Tourism. Arkansas State Parks manages 52 state parks and promotes Arkansas as a tourist destination. Arkansas Heritage preserves and promotes Arkansas’s natural and cultural history and heritage. Arkansas Tourism improves the state’s economy by generating travel and enhancing the state’s image.

Responsibilities

• Perform specialized trail maintenance, including bridge repair, resurfacing, erosion mitigation, herbicide application, and vegetation management.
• Supervise multiple maintenance teams and plan/execute trail projects.
• Oversee operation, maintenance, and repair of heavy equipment, power tools, and maintenance vehicles.
• Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance to identify potential issues.
• Maintain and repair tools, machinery, and equipment used in trade-related tasks.
• Operate a variety of hand and power tools, as well as heavy equipment such as UTVs and trucks.
• Maintain accurate records of materials used, work completed, and repairs performed.
• Work closely with other trades professionals, contractors, and agency staff to complete projects efficiently.
• Provide guidance or training to apprentices or less experienced workers when necessary.
• Perform skilled work in one or more trades (e.g., carpentry, welding) to maintain state-owned facilities and infrastructure.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• At least two (2) years of experience in one or more skilled trades (e.g., trail maintenance, equipment repair, carpentry, welding).
• Supervisory experience leading crews in trail maintenance or similar outdoor operations.
• Experience working independently in remote environments.
• Ability to interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
• Ability to diagnose issues, determine solutions, and execute repairs efficiently.
• Knowledge of preventative maintenance techniques.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred.

Qualifications

• Advanced knowledge and experience in one or more skilled trades (e.g., electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, masonry, welding, or painting).
• Ability to operate and maintain trade-specific tools, equipment, and machinery safely and effectively.
• Trade-related certifications (e.g., HVAC certification, journeyman electrician, plumbing license) if mandated by the trade.

Pay

Salary range: $52,137 – $77,163
