Skilled Laborers - Asphalt Paving Division

Job location: Wilmington, NC and surrounding areas

About the role

Perform general construction tasks involving physical labor at construction projects and plants. May operate hand and power tools of all types: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and a variety of other equipment and instruments. May clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, erect scaffolding, and clean up rubble and debris.

Responsibilities

• Operate jackhammers, drills, and other power tools as required.
• Position, join, align, and seal structural components, such as concrete wall sections and pipes.
• Shovel cement and other materials into portable cement mixers; and mix, pour, and spread concrete.
• Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials.
• Spray materials such as water, sand, steam, vinyl, paint, or stucco through hoses to clean, coat, or seal surfaces.
• Tend machines that pump concrete, grout, cement, sand, plaster, or stucco through spray-guns for application to ceilings and walls.
• Tend pumps, compressors, and generators to provide power for tools, machinery, and equipment, or to heat and move materials such as asphalt.
• Lubricate, clean, and repair machinery, equipment, and tools.
• Apply caulking compounds by hand or using caulking guns.
• Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards.
• Control traffic passing near, in, and around work zones.
• Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes.
• Erect and disassemble scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, and other temporary structures.
• Load and unload building materials, machinery, and tools.
• Mix ingredients to create compounds for covering or cleaning surfaces.
• Learn and follow safety regulations.
• Provide assistance to craft workers, such as carpenters, plasterers, and masons.
• Work long, flexible hours as demanded by customers including nights, weekends, and work outside for extended periods during all seasons of the year.
• Perform additional duties as required or directed by their immediate supervisor or other manager.

Requirements

• Must be a minimum of 18 years old.
• Good work ethic, reliable, and on time.
• 1 year experience in asphalt paving and working around heavy equipment.
• Valid driver's license with clean MVR is a must.
• Candidate must be able to perform all aspects of the laborers position.

Physical Demands

• Heavy physical effort required including pulling and lifting or moving heavy weight material with frequent lifting or moving materials or equipment (over 80 pounds).
• Position requires the ability to continuously work around any or all of the following: noise, dust, heat, cold, oil, and heavy equipment.
• Personal protective equipment is normally required.
• Position requires ability to exchange ideas quickly and clearly and the ability to receive and evaluate detailed information and instructions.
