Performs unskilled physical labor in the collection of municipal solid waste and recyclable material.
Participates in a Solid Waste Management Department on-the-job training program to obtain skills and knowledge to become a sideloader operator by training to drive the refuse (rear-end loader) equipment.
The sideloader operator trainee’s primary responsibilities will be working from the back of the truck.
This position requires mandatory overtime on scheduled workdays, weekends, holidays, and in response to disaster recovery efforts.
Collects household garbage from city curbs.
Empties and cleans truck.
Answers citizens’ questions regarding proper contents, packing weight, container types, pick-up times and placement of containers.
May perform special assignments as directed.

Education requirements: Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling.
Experience requirements: No experience is required.
Licenses required: Must obtain a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License within six months from hire. Must have a valid Class C Texas Driver’s License and comply with the City of Houston’s policy on driving.

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
Preference will be given to applicants who have a valid Class A or B CDL.
Applicants that can deliver great customer service to Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) Customers are a plus.
Willing to work a flexible schedule, dependable, have a good work ethic and team-oriented.

Selection / Skills Tests Required: The selection process will involve application review and/or interview.

This position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
Pay Grade: 6
