About the role
Reporting to the Chief Mine Engineer, the Short-Term Planning Superintendent will perform complex engineering duties including mine design, mine operation planning, and adaptation of industry best practices to optimize mine development and implementation strategies. This senior managerial role oversees and optimizes mine planning and scheduling to ensure efficient, safe resource extraction while managing a team and adhering to mine regulations.
Responsibilities
- Develop detailed daily, weekly, and monthly production schedules to ensure resource optimization and efficient production.
- Lead and own the Ore Control process, interpreting data to define precise ore vs. waste boundaries (polygons). Direct material flow to the sulfide concentrator, stockpiles, or waste rock facilities, and compare actual mined grades and volumes against geological models to improve planning accuracy.
- Supervise and develop a team of mine planners, engineers, and relevant staff, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge to perform effectively.
- Optimize mine operations by ensuring plans are practical, economical, and compliant with standards and regulations.
- Manage the mine planning budget, allocating resources effectively.
- Support the Copper World Integrated project team.
- Provide regular reports to the Principal Engineer and management team on mine plans, schedules, and performance.
- Identify and implement opportunities for improvement in mine planning processes and operations to enhance efficiency and safety.
- Assess risks for all tasks and ensure they are controlled before and during execution.
- Adhere to and promote Hudbay’s Health, Safety, and Environmental standards, driving a safety culture within the Mine Planning department. Prioritize safe production in all designs and report all incidents and accidents for investigation and corrective action.
- Develop the mine planning team to deliver the annual budget capably and consistently.
- Liaise with stakeholders, including internal departments, government agencies, and community representatives, to adapt to societal and regulatory expectations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering (required).
- Post-graduate degree (considered a strong asset).
- Minimum of ten (10) years of proven experience in mine engineering in open pit operations, with at least three (3) years at a senior supervisory level within a technical department.
Physical Demands
The role requires regular communication (talking/hearing) and frequent standing, walking, sitting, and use of hands. Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling may be required. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities may also be required.
Work Environment
The work environment includes exposure to moving mechanical parts, outdoor weather conditions (hot/dry), and locations with noise, fumes, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. A valid driver’s license is required.
