Short Term Disability Claim Specialist
About the role
The Opportunity The Short Term Disability Claim Specialist will be responsible for reviewing and assessing disability claims for our customers. You will review medical documentation, communicate with claimants/customers, and manage a caseload to ensure proper management of procedures and policies.
Responsibilities
- Applies all appropriate provisions of the disability contract to ensure MetLife’s liability is understood and appropriately applied.
- Encourage and support return to work through various programs and methodologies.
- Communicate with claimants to set expectations, assess medical and non-medical barriers to return to work, and keep them informed of claim status.
- Partner with claimants, specialty resources, and more experienced resources to develop a well-understood plan for each claimant.
- Execute individual claim action plans, serve as the point of contact for claimants, and make claim decisions.
- Manage assigned claims block, prioritize actions, utilize resources effectively, and make timely and accurate decisions.
- Deliver on commitments, return phone calls promptly, and communicate clearly with claimants.
- Proactively update partners involved in the claimant’s case when significant events occur.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Lives within a commutable distance from the site the role is posted in.
- Comprehensive understanding of disability contractual provisions, especially the definition of disability.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to coach Case Specialists to interview claimants dynamically.
- Basic knowledge of medical conditions, treatments, and prognosis.
- Expertise in system and tools such as MDG, DPA, and Intellis, and proficiency in leveraging these tools to improve claim management.
