Short Term Disability Claim Specialist
About the role
As a Claim owner and decision-maker on MetLife’s Global Customer Service and Operations (GCSO) team, you will administer claims within contractual provisions and internal/external guidelines. You will establish relationships with claimants to understand their perspective on disability, identify their functional capacity, and leverage that capacity within the context of the contract to support and encourage return to work as appropriate.
Responsibilities
- Apply all appropriate provisions of the disability contract to ensure MetLife’s liability is understood and appropriately applied throughout the life of the claim.
- Encourage and support return to work through a variety of programs and methodologies within the context of liability.
- Proactively communicate with the claimant to set expectations, assess medical and non-medical barriers to return to work, and keep them fully aware of the claim status.
- Set expectations with the claimant if other resources (e.g., Vocational Rehabilitation) will contact them.
- Partner with the claimant, specialty resources, and experienced team members to create a well-understood plan tailored to each claimant’s unique situation, functional capacity, and prognosis.
- Proactively update partners working with the claimant when key events (e.g., claim closure, return to work) are being considered or have occurred.
- Manage an assigned block of claims, including prioritizing actions, utilizing resources effectively, and making timely and accurate decisions.
- Execute individual claim action plans, serve as the point of contact for the claimant, and make claim decisions.
- Provide a high level of service to the claimant, including delivering on commitments, timely return of phone calls, and clear communication.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Comprehensive understanding of disability contractual provisions, especially the definition of disability.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to dynamically interview claimants to set expectations and gather necessary information.
- Critical-thinking, strategic-thinking, and prioritization skills.
- Ability to give and receive feedback using specific measurements and observed behavior, as well as openness to receiving feedback.
New hires should live a commutable distance from one of the following locations: Oriskany, NY; Bloomfield, CT; Tampa, FL; or Cary, NC.
Qualifications
- Associate Degree (preferred).
- 1+ years of claims management experience, preferably in the healthcare field.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Pay
The expected salary range for this position is $40,000 - $52,000. This role may also be eligible for annual short-term incentive compensation and stock-based long-term incentives. All incentives and benefits are subject to the applicable plan terms.
