Shop Welder Technician 2 (Line Bore)

About the Role

The Shop Welder Tech (Line Bore) performs intermediate welding repairs and fabrication using Holt, Caterpillar, and AWS Welding Procedures, Standards, and Codes. This position requires experience with precision measuring tools, layout/fit-up tools, blueprints, and drawings. Responsibilities include performing basic line boring jobs and removing/installing basic components. The role emphasizes alignment with company values, collaboration, and ongoing self-development.

Responsibilities

• Model, promote, and reinforce the company’s Values Based Leadership (VBL) tools and processes.
• Perform intermediate repairs, fabrication, and welding on heavy equipment and components with minimal oversight.
• Demonstrate proficiency with cutting/track torch, air arc gouging, layout/fit-up tools, band saw, chop saw, and magnetic drill press.
• Maintain company equipment, tools, and work areas in clean, working order.
• Ensure welding work complies with specific codes, procedures, and quality standards.
• Work overtime as required by workload and customer needs.
• Perform basic line boring jobs and removal/installation of heavy equipment components.
• Complete electronic inspection reports using portable devices.
• Search and order parts electronically using the SIS system.
• Prepare accurate technical inspection/service reports and documentation.
• Pursue ongoing self-development, classroom training, and on-the-job training.
• Adhere to safety policies and procedures at all times.
• Perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; additional specialized/technical training or college courses in Welding Technology preferred.
• At least two years of experience; three or more years preferred.
• Welding certification in FCAW 1” T-1 material (3G and 4G) and GTAW 3/8” mild steel.
• Ability to read blueprints and shop drawings with weld symbols.
• Ongoing safety training, CAT SIS program procedures/process training, and First Aid/CPR training.
• Ability to cut out/weld out broken bolts on components.

Skills

• Ability to complete most welding repairs on mild and hard steel using FCAW (all positions) and perform torch work, cutting, and gouging.
• General knowledge of equipment and dimensional tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
• Knowledge of specification and drawing interpretation.
• Proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work around welding machines, overhead cranes, cutting torches, gauges, fit-up/layout tools, forklifts, and material handling equipment.
• Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 lb.; team or mechanical lift required for heavier items.
• Constant movement and use of limbs; requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.
• Ability to climb ladders and equipment while maintaining three points of contact.
• Ability to maneuver safely and work underneath equipment.
• Reaction to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and instructions.
• Significant time standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, stooping, climbing, and reaching.

Work Environment

• Use of common protective or safety equipment.
• Regularly works outdoors around moving mechanical parts; noise levels may be loud.
• Exposure to weather extremes (heat, cold, moisture/humidity) when working outside.
• Exposure to small quantities of chemicals, dust, steam, high-pressure water, and high-speed rotating equipment.
• Occasional work in cramped spaces and/or high places.
