Shop Supervisor

About the role

Supports day-to-day maintenance operations by overseeing a team of technicians across one or more shifts. Supervises repair activities, coordinates shop workflows, and ensures compliance with safety and maintenance standards.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises shop technicians, including providing coaching, oversight, and daily work direction.
  • Assists with training and supporting the performance development and discipline of team members.
  • Monitors shop operations to ensure timely and quality completion of preventative maintenance and repairs.
  • Coordinates with the parts team to manage inventory levels and ensure availability of needed materials.
  • Provides hands-on instruction in diagnostic software, tools, and repair techniques to promote technician development.
  • Supports expense monitoring by reviewing trends and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Collaborates with terminal personnel to prioritize equipment availability and readiness.
  • Ensures proper documentation and workflow approval for repair orders, including vendor and warranty work.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • Read, write, communicate and comprehend the English language in order to perform the various tasks of the job, including but not limited to: converse with co-workers and members of the general public; understand oral and written instructions as well as governmental regulations; respond to questions and inquiries from management and government representatives; and accurately review and complete various documents, reports and records required of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of equipment maintenance experience, preferably in a freight or logistics environment.
  • 2+ years of experience in a supervisory or lead technician role.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic software and repair of brake systems, transmissions, and rear ends.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant maintenance systems.

Work Conditions and Physical Demands

  • Regular exposure to a shop environment with moderate noise, temperature fluctuations, and moving equipment.
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, and occasional kneeling or climbing to inspect vehicles or observe repair work.
  • Occasional lifting, pushing, or pulling of parts, tools, and equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Regular use of hands and arms for reaching, handling tools, or operating diagnostic equipment.
  • Adequate vision (with or without correction) to read gauges, manuals, and inspect work quality.
  • Adequate hearing (with or without aids) to detect equipment sounds, communicate effectively, and follow safety signals.
  • May occasionally work outside normal business hours to meet operational needs or respond to urgent repairs.
