About the Role
A Shipping and Receiving Clerk ensures accurate handling of incoming and outgoing shipments, maintains records, and prepares items for transport.
Responsibilities
- Verify and record details of incoming and outgoing shipments by comparing identifying information, counts, weights, or measurements against bills of lading, invoices, orders, or other records.
- Determine the most efficient method of shipment based on shipping procedures, routes, and rates.
- Affix shipping labels on packed cartons using UPS or other carriers.
- Assemble cardboard containers or select preassembled containers for packaging.
- Insert items into containers using spacers, fillers, and protective padding to prevent damage.
- Nail covers on wooden crates and bind containers with metal tape using a strapping machine.
- Stamp, stencil, or glue identifying information and shipping instructions onto crates or containers.
- Post weights and shipping charges, and affix postage as required.
- Unpack and examine incoming shipments, reject damaged items, record shortages, and correspond with shippers to resolve issues.
- Route items to the appropriate departments within the facility.
- Examine outgoing shipments to ensure they meet specifications and quality standards.
- Maintain inventory of shipping materials and supplies.
- Operate tier-lift trucks or hand trucks to move, convey, or hoist shipments between shipping-and-receiving platforms, storage, or work areas.
- Direct others in preparing outgoing and receiving incoming shipments when necessary.
- Specialize in handling returned goods, including damaged, defective, or unsold products, and process them accordingly.
