Shipping Assistant

About the Role

The Warehouse Assistant operates a bale clamp lift truck, forklift B/P, or roll clamp truck to receive all OCC (Old Corrugated Containerboard) arriving in vans and/or on flatbed trucks, as well as other goods and materials such as totes and freight. As the primary Shipping Clerk, this role prepares finished paper rolls of corrugated medium for shipment via flatbeds, vans, and railcars.

Responsibilities

• Work safely after completing extensive OSHA-required safety training relevant to a paper mill manufacturing environment.
• Complete forklift truck checklist at the start of each shift, inspecting fluid levels, safety features, brakes, tires, steering, and other components.
• Participate in shift change discussions with outgoing personnel to address scheduling issues or problems.
• Operate forklift truck, clamp truck, and B/P truck with precision to prevent equipment damage; refuel trucks at the end of each shift.
• Direct incoming traffic in the yard and guide drivers to specific areas.
• Process receiving documentation and weigh trucks in and out of the mill; insert a moisture probe into 5 bales and record moisture readings for incoming deliveries.
• Stage bales in designated yard areas, including high-density sections, store bale sections, DLK section, or next to the belt.
• Understand roll storage areas (e.g., C001, A001, ST4) and stack rolls safely, chocking properly to prevent movement.
• Comprehend the trim schedule and plan loads for railcars, vans, and flatbeds; locate rolls in the Mesa system to complete partial loads.
• Load railcars, vans, and flatbeds using B/P or clamp trucks for outgoing shipments.
• Comprehend smart sheets, log data, print Bills of Lading (BOL), and provide necessary shipping documentation to drivers.
• Collaborate with hostlers to move full vans and communicate with the Gardner dispatcher for logistics needs (e.g., vans or flatbeds).
• Partner with Union Pacific crews during rail switches.
• Work with the dry end crew on trim schedule issues, such as determining which rolls need plugging or prioritizing combos; convert rolls from hold or ATP to good rolls.
• Perform rail pushes, operate rail pushers, and follow safety criteria for safe execution.
• Follow safety and clean-up checklists.
• Use technology, including computer software (Outlook, Mesa, and other programs), and operate Mesa units mounted on lifts.
• Work rotating or fixed shifts and overtime as necessary.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED.
• Ability to read, write, and speak English in simple sentences.
• Basic math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Ability to apply common sense to carry out simple written or oral instructions.
• Pass a mechanical aptitude test (exception: internal applicants who took the test prior to hire).
• Learn to use various company software packages, including MESA, Maximo, JD Edwards, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
