About the role
SA Recycling is looking for a person who continuously monitors the hot work area for potential fires, ensuring quick detection and response to prevent fire spread. The fire watch has the authority to stop work if unsafe conditions arise and is responsible for initiating alarms and attempting to extinguish small fires.
Responsibilities
- Inspect pre-hot work area for fire hazards, housekeeping issues, safety hazards, environmental hazards, etc.
- Monitor area and cutter during hot work.
- Inspect vessel during cutter's lunch period and after working shift end for approximately 30 minutes.
- Notify supervisor in case any hazards will or have occurred at hot work area.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience in a similar role or a basic understanding of fire safety and prevention is preferred.
- Knowledge of fire hazards and the ability to recognize potential risks.
- Familiarity with different types of fire extinguishers and their proper use.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to stay alert for extended periods.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to remain calm and composed in emergency situations.
- Team player with a strong commitment to safety and adherence to protocols.
- Compliance with all company safety policies and procedures.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
The work environment is a scrap metal yard, outdoor, with moderate to heavy physical demand. Equipment and tools used include yard equipment, hand tools, and PPE. The role requires repetitive motions, gripping, and sensory demands such as hearing, vision, smell, touch, and taste.
