About the role

HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding Division is the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi and a major contributor to the economic growth of Alabama. For nearly 85 years, we’ve designed, built, and maintained amphibious ships, destroyers, and cutters for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. As the largest supplier of U.S. Navy surface combatants, we’re simultaneously building four classes of ships and have pioneered the development and production of technologically advanced, highly capable ships for the surface Navy fleet.

Responsibilities

  • Audit in-process hot work, including physical inspection of ship areas, equipment, care, and protection.
  • Shut down work or take immediate action to alleviate fire and safety hazards when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with Command Media documents pertaining to hot work and fire prevention.
  • Coach and counsel personnel on care and protection, ship cleanliness, and at-risk behaviors.
  • Respond to shipboard fires and emergency calls.
  • Assist the casualty response team, including crowd control, securing areas, work-site evacuation, and obtaining temporary services.
  • Support Ships Management and Fire Department personnel in investigating fire incidents to determine root cause.
  • Fulfill additional common management responsibilities as outlined in Shipbuilding Management Charter 0001 (SBMC 0001).

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Six (6) years of shipyard experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding of shipboard fire protection and control requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of shipboard structures, systems, compartments, arrangement, and nomenclature.
  • Strong knowledge of hot work operations and fire prevention measures.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for conflict resolution and interactions with craft employees and ship’s management.
  • Willingness and ability to work any assigned shift.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Apprenticeship Program graduates that meet the basic qualifications.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
