Shift Supervisor

Position Overview

The Shift Supervisor program at the 59th Street Women’s Shelter is responsible for directing a team of Residential Aides in providing direct assistance to clients adhering to shelter rules and regulations. This role requires some latitude for independent action under the supervision of the Operations Coordinator or Assistant Shelter Director.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Provides guidance and direction to Residential Aides, ensuring adequate coverage for shifts; monitors performance and initiates administrative action as necessary.
• Trains staff through on-site sessions and referrals to outside training sources.
• Oversees facility operations, including handling emergencies and crisis situations.
• Orients new arrivals, informs them of shelter rules, gives tours, assigns beds and supplies, and assists with medication distribution.
• Participates in daily meetings and reports on client behavior to Case Managers.
• Supervises linen removal, ensuring proper protocols and documentation.
• Assists in the cafeteria, distributes Metro Cards, and participates in recreational activities.
• Performs escort duties or ensures escorts are provided as requested.
• Supervises a team of Residential Aides and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED with at least 2 years of experience working with underserved populations, including homelessness, substance use, mental health, and LGBTQIA+ populations.
• Fire Guard certification F-02 or F-80, as applicable; First Aid/CPR; Narcan Certified.
• Team Building: Ability to enhance staff skills and foster a team spirit.
• Organizational: Assess work requests, prioritize tasks, and assign work to staff.
• Communication: Excellent oral, written, and listening skills.
• Interpersonal: Ability to interact with clients and staff at all levels.
• Computer: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Language: Bilingual or multilingual a plus.

Physical Activities

While performing the duties of this position, Shift Supervisors must be able to climb stairs, walk throughout the facility, stand to communicate with clients and staff, sit for extended periods at a computer, and bend or squat to retrieve records. Assistance may be provided for lifting heavier items.
