About the Role

Supervises the efficient and safe operation of a wastewater treatment plant during an operating shift. Provides technical guidance to staff and management on operational procedures and problems. Oversees the monitoring of plant equipment operation and treatment processes, identifies malfunctions, and performs duties of a similar nature as required.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in directing and supervising the use of resources (materials, equipment, and personnel) to meet operation and maintenance objectives and comply with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit requirements.
  • Directs actions in emergency situations and ensures adequate shift personnel coverage for operation and maintenance.
  • Assists in establishing operating guidelines for unit processes to achieve NPDES Permit compliance.
  • Defines duties and responsibilities of operations personnel and develops operating record forms.
  • Reviews logs, evaluates operating and laboratory data, and observes wastewater processes to identify potential problems and ensure proper operation.
  • Recommends process adjustments within established operational guidelines.
  • Plans work schedules and makes operational and maintenance decisions in conjunction with management.
  • Communicates plant conditions to staff and leadership, enforces organizational policies, and updates management as necessary.
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure satisfactory completion.
  • Assists in checking and approving personnel time reporting and evaluating personnel performance.
  • Initiates incident and accident reports and participates in grievance and disciplinary hearings.
  • Encourages cooperation among employees to achieve work objectives and manages continuous change.
  • Conducts equipment and unit process training for operations personnel and provides guidance for employee development.
  • Coordinates the collection and retrieval of plant process samples and reviews laboratory and operating data.
  • Performs basic water quality analyses in the field to facilitate process and chemical feed adjustments.
  • Maintains records on plant safety equipment and enforces safe work practices.
  • Supports engineers and contractors on equipment and unit process modifications and start-ups.
  • Recommends purchases of tools, materials, supplies, and parts, and coordinates inventory levels with the storeroom.
  • Supervises operating and, when necessary, maintenance personnel.
  • Shift Supervisors with a valid Ohio EPA Class III Wastewater Operator certificate may fill in for Shift Managers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or state-recognized equivalent.
  • Associate degree in engineering, engineering technology, business, or a natural science is preferred.
  • Five years of wastewater experience.
  • Two years of experience supervising and/or managing people, processes, or projects is preferred.
  • Valid Ohio EPA Class II or higher Wastewater Operator certification (Class III required within 36 months if only Class II at start).
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Ability to analyze, communicate, comprehend, coordinate, make decisions, and problem-solve.
  • Physical tasks include balancing, bending, climbing, crouching, driving, feeling, kneeling/squatting, reaching, sitting, standing, talking, typing, and walking.
  • Repetitive movements such as simple grasping, power grasping, and fine manipulation with both hands.
  • Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 60 lbs. from floor to waist, waist to shoulder, and floor to shoulder on an occasional basis.
  • Visual demands include accommodation, color vision, depth perception, far acuity, and near acuity.
  • Ability to withstand extremely loud noise exposure for fifteen minutes or longer on a frequent basis.
  • Exposure to environmental conditions such as respiratory hazards, extreme cold/heat (non-weather related), outdoor work, vibrations, wet/humid conditions, and work around large machinery.

Pay

USD $72,701 - $90,875 (commensurate with experience).
