About the role
The Veterinary Hospital Shift Lead (“Shift Lead”) provides exceptional client and pet experiences while assisting the Practice Manager and/or Chief of Staff (COS) in guiding the team to maximize productivity and profitability of the hospital, and helps ensure effective communication with all clients, internal stakeholders, and colleagues. The Shift Lead also performs the duties of a Client Services Coordinator and Veterinary Assistant when needed.
Responsibilities
- Assist and support hospital leadership in developing an efficient, productive team that provides the highest quality care and service to pets and clients.
- Follow Banfield protocols and practices, focusing the team to achieve practice priorities while building the culture and brand.
- Provide day-to-day supervision of the team when called upon, ensuring quality medical care, exceptional client service, associate engagement, and maximum productivity.
- Help create an environment where the team can deliver quality, efficient, and effective veterinary care to pets while fostering associate engagement.
- Provide professional, efficient, and exceptional client service (lead by example), ensuring all associates do the same, including client education about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventive care, pet health needs, hospital services, and marketing campaigns; effectively resolve client issues.
- Assist in effectively scheduling associates to meet client needs, while proactively planning time off and continuing education (CE) scheduling.
- Ensure compliance with all practice policies and procedures, including adherence to Banfield dress and grooming guidelines.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.

Requirements
- High School Diploma preferred.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Minimum of two years of veterinary hospital experience.
Special Working Conditions
- Ability to work at a computer for long periods of time.
- Ability to be confident around pets (i.e., dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, etc.).
- This position requires working special hours including weekends and evening shifts.
- Must have mental processes for reasoning, remembering, mathematics, and language ability (reading, writing, and speaking the English language) to perform the duties proficiently.
- Must be comfortable working in an environment with loud noise (moderately high) and strong smells.
- Requires sufficient ambulatory skills to perform duties while at the hospital.
- Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds.
- Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm-hand-finger dexterity with the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate equipment.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Associate is routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances.
Pay
The pay range for this role is $17.57 - $22.45 hourly. The specific rate is determined based on the candidate’s experience, skill level, and education, and may vary depending on location or applicable minimum wage laws.
