Shift Lead
Position Summary
The Day Shift Supervisor – Operations is responsible for direct supervision of plant operations personnel and real-time oversight of a 800 MW 2×1 combined cycle facility, including Balance of Plant systems and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plant. This position provides visible field leadership during day shift activities, reinforces operational discipline, ensures strict adherence to safety and regulatory requirements, and aligns authority with accountability for plant performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervisory Leadership
- Directly supervises and assigns work to Operations personnel during day shift.
- Provides field presence during high-risk evolutions (LOTO implementation, startups, shutdowns, outages).
- Enforces plant procedures, Conduct of Operations standards, and safety rules.
- Performs verification walkdowns as required.
- Ensures quality shift turnover and accurate communication of plant status.
- Reviews and approves time-off requests and overtime assignments.
- Holds personnel accountable for performance expectations and procedural compliance.
- Operational Oversight
- Manages the operation of a 800 MW 2×1 combined cycle facility and BOP systems, including ZLD.
- Assumes responsibility for plant operations during assigned shift.
- Oversees the Facility Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) program during shift.
- Directs plant startups, shutdowns, and abnormal condition response.
- Reviews logbooks, journals, and reports to identify trends and risks.
- Maintains compliance with safety, environmental, and NERC requirements.
- Identifies and resolves CEMS issues to prevent environmental excursions.
- Oversees water chemistry compliance for HRSG, cooling tower, boilers, and demin systems.
- Performs operational testing and troubleshooting as required.
- Assumes CRO responsibilities when necessary.
- Maintenance & Outage Integration
- Covers coordination of Operations interface during outages and major maintenance.
- Oversees operational clearance boundaries and equipment configuration.
- Ensures proper execution of switching, isolations, and return-to-service processes.
- Supports CMMS work order prioritization related to operational risk.
- Participates in outage planning and readiness meetings.
- Training & Development
- Trains and mentors operations personnel toward CRO qualification.
- Reinforces qualification standards and procedural adherence.
- Sustains continuous improvement in operational discipline.
- Assists in procedure review and updates.
Required Skills / Knowledge
- Demonstrated knowledge of combined cycle plant operations (CTGs, STG, HRSG, BOP systems).
- Working knowledge of Siemens T3000 DCS.
- Strong understanding of LOTO, switching, and energy control procedures.
- Ability to supervise and lead personnel in a union environment.
- Ability to make sound operational decisions under pressure.
- Proficiency in CMMS (Maximo and SAP preferred) systems and Microsoft Office tools.
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, logic diagrams, and electrical one-lines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years Control Room Operator (CRO) or supervisory experience.
- Strong understanding of Siemens combustion turbines, steam turbines, HRSGs, generators, instrumentation, and water chemistry.
- Siemens T3000 DCS.
- ZLD experience preferred.
Education
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate’s degree or technical certification preferred.
Work Schedule
- Rotating shifts.
- Required availability for overtime during outages, forced events, and call-ins.
