Sheriff Patrol Deputy

Description

This position is responsible for enforcing federal, state and local traffic, criminal and civil laws. Duties are varied and performed within established guidelines requiring sound judgment to determine appropriate procedure. EOE, Veterans Preference.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position is under the general supervision of the Undersheriff and Sergeants.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of positions in this classification.

Essential Functions

• Patrols the North district in a patrol car on assignment for the purpose of observing the area for possible criminal activity or other conditions that could endanger public safety, investigating complaints, and enforcing laws;
• Maintains high visibility;
• Investigates and reports accidents, dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, or other hazardous conditions;
• Investigates crimes, interviews witnesses, complainants, and victims; and gathers physical evidence and preserves for court; conducts follow up investigations as needed;
• Enforces all felony and misdemeanor laws;
• Apprehends, arrests and detains criminal suspects and law violators when necessary; follows proper procedures when making arrests;
• Serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil and other official papers;
• Serves as witness in court and provides evidence in court as required;
• Responds to emergency calls and practices safety procedures in answering and responding to calls;
• Checks residential and commercial property for security as requested; checks on Senior Citizens as requested;
• Assists motorists in various situations as needed;
• Investigates and reports fires or other related events; keeps bystanders out of danger; safeguards property; and renders first aid in emergency situations;
• Prepares, processes, and/or transmits various reports as required;
• Records information concerning events that took place during tour of duty, and records such activity in the manner as prescribed by the Office;
• Maintains weapons and equipment in functional and presentable condition;
• Accounts for and transports evidence coming into custody;
• Answers questions asked by the general public, works with juveniles and adults in related matters; refers public to person or agencies which can provide further assistance as required;
• Works under stressful, high risk conditions.

Qualifications

• MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Must pass or provide proof of Police Officer Selection test with a minimum score of 70 points. Must be a U.S. citizen Minimum age 21 High school diploma or GED. Experience or training which would demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.
• SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS Must have a clean, acceptable driving record that qualifies per the County's vehicle policy. Possession of/or ability to obtain DPSST (Dept. of Public Safety Standards and Training) certification within one year of employment. NOTE: felony convictions may be disqualifying.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Experience with communication and serving the public Law enforcement terminology and technology Some knowledge of the methods used in the care and custody of prisoners. Experience with writing detailed reports

Background Checks

In order to be considered for this position, final applicants will be going through background checks which may include; Criminal, DMV, Pre- employment Drug test, Psychological testing, Reference and Certification checks. Must reside in Malheur County with 6 months of being hired.
