Job Summary
Performs general duty law enforcement work in protecting the lives, property, and rights of citizens in the County. Duties include serving and processing criminal and legal papers, attending court, answering complaint calls, patrolling the county, and performing various community policing tasks.
Responsibilities
- Serves and processes criminal and legal papers
- Attends court as a witness to give testimony
- Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior, and other needs
- Interviews witnesses, gathers evidence, and prepares reports
- Detected unusual conditions and maintains surveillance and observation for stolen cars, missing persons, suspects, etc.
- Participates in community policing, providing security, staying informed about community affairs, and serving as a liaison and contact regarding law enforcement matters
- Advises the public on laws and local ordinances; provides information to the general public
- Regulates and directs vehicular traffic at busy times or when traffic signals malfunction or accidents require; maintains order at public gatherings
- Operates a radio to receive instructions and information from or to report information
- Serves in other capacities of the Sheriff’s Office on an as needed basis, to include but not limited to civil, investigations, narcotics, detention, and administrative divisions
- Required to serve during times of disaster and unrest
Qualifications
- Graduation from high school and some law enforcement training or experience preferred
- Possession of a Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Certificate; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Current enrollment in BLET program may be considered for Cadet qualification
- Certification as a law enforcement officer and completion of all requirements set in accordance with the North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards Commission
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license
